I want to make lap quilts for my daughters, maybe about 65" x 60". How do I know how many blocks to make for a quilt that size?

I always just guesstimate from the finished size of the block i'm working with. I'd just make 5 or 6 inch blocks into 9 patches and lay it out until I liked the size! Not a normal quilter here I suppose ;) hope you figure it out

You need decide how large you want to make a single block. So, for instance, if the block you choose finishes at 12 inches square, you would need 5 across and 5 down, or 25 blocks. This will give you a 60X60, then add some borders to make it a bit larger. If your block finishes at 9", then you would need 7 across and 6 down, or 42 blocks. This will give you a 63 by 54 body, add some borders, etc. All depends on the finished size of the block you choose.

I hate math. Using graph paper has always been useful to me.

I had one I did recently where there were only so many pieces of the focus fabric, counted up the squares and made the same amount in another fabric. I laid it out realized I didn't have enough so cut the same amount in ANOTHER fabric. Laid them out and realized it was too small so I added 4 inch borders.

who needs math?
