I go on "binges" it seems. I will get tons of stuff and then go awhile w/o buying anything. I like the binging part better lol :D:D

I know how compulsive I am too, but I just keep telling myself enough is enough!

I just finished reorganizing my sewing room. Spent a whole day just going thru my fabric. And it took a whole day. Felt just like Christmas.

shrabar 12-11-2010 07:18 AM

Try saying to your self is it a WANT OR A NEED and then go from there... Sorry but I don't buy material I use all of what I have that has been given to me when I bought a quilting machine. The only material I did buy was for the backing. Merry Christmas

littleone 12-11-2010 10:31 AM

Instead of adding to shopping cart I now add to wish list. Keeps me from buying.

theoldgraymare 12-11-2010 10:54 AM

I justify buyin more fabric by telling myself that prices are going way up next year, and I won't be able to afford to buy anymore. And I only buy on clearance/sale under $4. And I delete most emails from fabric stores without opening them. And I've found fabric shopping is the best cure for depression. And I really don't spend much money on anything else. And...and...and....

So I am trying to curb my buying while 'under the influence". DH doesn't really complain tho. I'm pretty good compared to some of the wives the guys he works with are. I've heard of them having a charge card & running it up to $10-20,000. I won't use a charge card thank goodness!

one of my medications can do this too and my Dr asks me every time if I have any impulses the I have difficulty controlling, gambling, drinking, shopping.

Join the club, we stand right with you. Have a great time sewing and let us see what you make with those 10 yards.

Shemjo 12-11-2010 11:52 AM

I do not shop on line, BUT I have some really GREAT shops nearby! I do not need any more fabric, so I am staying out of the stores.

Lucky Lindy 12-11-2010 01:19 PM

Guess what? You will find something to do with your fabric and besides, it really doesn't eat much!!!

I have begun to do that also. I say to myself, "I have too much already... so why even look". Sometimes I do look but no one is giving free shipping away unless you buy 'x' amount of fabric, etc.

Currently, I am re sorting my fabric and I am discovering fabric I had forgotten about. It is a nice discovery. I have also learned that I have had pretty good tastes in the past. I like what I have purchased. LOL We are funny creatures!

oops 12-11-2010 02:59 PM

Today I bought ten yards of white. My white was depleted and with 40% off how could I not?. So I will go without grocery shopping for a week and dig into the stash of food that there is plenty of in the pantry and freezer. You know there are always ways to find money and not feel quilty,

liese 12-11-2010 04:26 PM

You sound like me! During the summer I did the Fabric.com sale. When the UPS man showed up with the beat up box he wanted to open it to make sure nothing was damaged. I told him no worry -- it's only fabric -- 90 lbs of it! My DH was in shock -- 90 lbs of fabric in one delivery!

That is what I am doing also....it almost hurts to push the delete button, but I really can't justify buying any more fabric....sale or no sale! Now...if....I....can just....keep my....finger...away from the..."buy" button!

Me too. If I go there, I buy!

Birdie6153 12-11-2010 04:40 PM

I've been watching the different programs about hoarders and realized I was one. I have successfully given away alot of my fabrics that I realized I would never do anything with, and I have stopped looking at web sites and going to fabric stores unless I absolutely need to for supplies - and I try not to look at the fabrics. It helps, too, that I don't live real close to fabric stores right now.

daisey 12-11-2010 04:52 PM

I am bad bad bad too...but I think its terminal for me.

Playtime7 12-11-2010 05:07 PM

I tell all my friends I work for Connecting Threads.... maybe I should buy some of their stock... You should see how many boxes I saved to wrap presents in... :)

Okay now i don't feel SO bad....90lbs???! OMG!!!

quilterfly 12-11-2010 05:54 PM

Aren't we a pitiful lot? We would get little sympathy from most people! I try to justify my obsessive purchasing of fabric by telling myself a good portion of it goes into charity quilts. Does that help?

sassycat2sew 12-11-2010 06:20 PM

Yeah my doctor put me on that Nuvigil medicine too, it's one of those euphoric type drugs that keeps you wide awake and running around like your hair's on fire. It also gives me headaches, so I got her to bump up my CPAP machine instead, so now I'm sleeping better, and don't have to use the Nuvigil but once in a blue moon, when I want to stay up half the night quilting. :XD:

Only 10 yards? I have said no more fabric and brought home another 60 yards.. so dont feel bad. To justify this I am making throws and baby quilts to donate to different groups as soon as my 8 Christmas gifts are done being stitched this weekend..

Jim 12-11-2010 06:51 PM

I like to feel the fabric...so buying online isn't something tempting..but I do like to see so I can look for it in the fabric shops my wife and I frequent...thanks for the new links...lol

Me too. Works quite well.

liese 12-11-2010 07:12 PM

YES -- and I'm still sewing and buying - day in and day out! Help -- I need a break from it soon!

liese 12-11-2010 07:13 PM

Suzi - where are you in upstate NY? I'm here too!

jojosnana 12-11-2010 07:17 PM

Go ahead and place that order. But I think I am going to try the revisit all the fabric I have and see if there is inspiration in there. I do think fabric is an adiction but there are worse ones out there. So, I just keep sewing.

quiltgrammyt2 12-11-2010 07:26 PM

So far I haven't bought any fabric on-line but do go and look quite often,I'm a little afraid that once I start I won't be able to stop.
The LQS I go to is in the same town my daughter and grandkids live in I go see them every Tuesday which is the same day the shop has everything 10% off,but the last 3 weeks I've had to force myself to stay away from shop if I want to get Christmas for anyone besides myself,I am starting to feel some withdrawls tho, lol, hope I can make it past the hloidays and maybe catch the end of year sales and my b-day is in January,so I may have to buy my own gift then, yeaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

Ramona Byrd 12-11-2010 08:08 PM

We have discovered a new plague that hits only on quilters. It is spread by touching the keys of our computers and transmitted by electrical impulses going through a plague carrier called "Quilting Board" and to date, in spite of intense attention by husbands and family members, no cure has yet been found.

Research continues all around the world, and a group of husbands have also been complaining that for some reason, every time their wives leave the house, or sit down at a computer, the numbers on their credit cards become worn down with use. This is known as a side effect of this plague.

More information will be forthcoming when new evidence is
found on how fast this disease spreads. Caution is advised, since anyone can be injured when warning quilters of this disease, either by foul language or hand instruments with long, sharp points or round weapons with razor sharp edges.

You got 10 yards of fabric for $37???!!! Excellent. lol

OneMoreQuilt 12-11-2010 08:22 PM

When you figure out how to stop, let me know!!

MaryAnna 12-11-2010 08:25 PM

Yes, donnajean, me too! you have the right idea! I won't even browse online or at the stores for fabric right now. Maybe in the Spring.
I'd like to work my way through my stash for 2011, only buying backing fabric when needed.

Blessings,
MaryAnna

deelost 12-11-2010 08:26 PM

don't get a storage space!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will fill up faster than any sewing room.... Out of sight ......out of control.!
Take it from one who KNOWS

PamS 12-11-2010 08:47 PM

It's the fabric company's fault - THEY are the ones putting their fabric on sale and enticing us, right??? Bear Paw Quilting got me for about $100 today - they have a bunch of quilting fabric for $3.49/yd. If there's a cure for this, I think I only want half a dose (-;

auntmarie 12-12-2010 06:47 AM

I do the same thing. Look at the material and inspiration will come!!!!!!!!!

Annz 12-12-2010 07:36 AM

stay away from the fabric stores and fabric sites on the computer. It is hard but it can be done. Look at what you already have and I'm sure that will help you stay away.

I agree with Donna Jean. I have to cut down not just for financial reasons, but for space constraints, and the only way I've found is to STOP LOOKING!

Rann 12-12-2010 10:15 AM

To help satiate my being a fabric junkie I will look at a sale site and put all I want in the cart. Then when I go look at the cart and see the total, I nearly faint and delete it all. That way I can shop and not buy anything. I do the same thing at places like WalMart. Fill my buggy, decide what I don't need and return the items where I got them. When I stated quilting, my DD's made me promise not to stockpile fabric. Too bad--I just got better at hiding it. I do buy but not as much as I think I want.

reginalovesfabric 12-12-2010 04:38 PM

I have NO will power for buying fabric or eating red velvet cake.
