Non Mitered Corners on Binding
 

I know, I should be doing mitered corners on my quilts, but on little ones I'd like to do them where you have 4 sides to sew on, and no mitered corners. There was a thread on here not to long ago that showed how to do it. It was easy, so I didn't bookmark it. But for the life of me, my brain is just not working. Does anyone remember that thread and what it was called. Thanks for your help.

Are you talking about rounding the corners? I often do that. I just get a mug and draw a disappearing line around each corner by lining the edge of the mug up with the two sides of the corner. It rounds them nicely and then I cut the line I have just drawn. No need to do mitered corners on these. Sure makes it quicker to put the binding on. Hope I understood you correctly. If not, maybe another board member will have the right answer.

If you are doing the 4 sided method, the binding needs to be single thickness. Look at this site and scroll dow till you see Sew on The Binding non mitered. http://www.quilterscache.com/StartQu...ltingfive.html

I remember a lady saying she bound the smaller quilts differently - using a 2-1/2" double fold binding but sew it down the sides first, then cut it off. Then sew the bottom and top on, allowing the ends to be kept open to insert a dowel rod in order to hang them. That is how I do my small wall hangings. I insert the dowel after I have the top binding on and use the fishing line to be tied on to each end, making the hanger. If the little quilt does not hang correctly, I insert a bottom dowel rod. Very simple.

There is also an article on the QB website. Look in "Articles". There is great instructions to make mitered corners. It makes it so easy, and it works every time! I struggled with corners for many years, but I don't struggle with them any more!

I have been trying to learn mitered corners and getting better at making them. I use to do rounded corner, and I still like them better for bed sized quilts as I like the way they hang better.

Jingle, when you do a rounded corner do you have to use binding cut on the bias? Or can you use binding cut WOF?

You have to use bias binding so it will curve around. Mitered borders are really no big deal. I don't want to go to the work of sewing, cutting, sewing, etc.

I have made 79 quilts and not one of them is mitered. I do straight sides every time. Haven't had a complaint yet. :-)

I have a quilt from over 12 years ago hanging up right now that I did my bindings on that way. yes, four different strips of binding. the last ones you would fold over your ends into the inside and then finish stitching. you can even hand stitch the ends closed then if you wish. simple, and no miters. I probably have a link somewhere for this but can't find it right now. I call it individual binding but that's evidently not what it's called, since I don't see it. Will continue to look.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm trying to hard to make this easy. I can miter corners just fine, but on some of my small little ones I really don't like the mitered corners. So thanks for the tut on youtube and the idea of using the top binding to put the dowl through. I would have never thought about that. So I guess I can finish up the two little snowmen for my girls before January is over.

I hate mitering and love rounded corners so I use bias binding and round corners. I've even added a border so that I could round without messing up blocks.

I did some recent placemats that way too.

I just sew the 2 opposite sides on and turn them. Then add the other two sides and fold under the ends to finish them. Nothing fancy, just done.

I have never seen this but like it and see where it is useful. Thanks for asking the question.

Sorry, but I use doubled binding when I do this. See no reason not to.

yea, not single thickness. I do double just like normal, even for four individual strips of binding.
anyone done regular binding with 2 inch strips? I just found some binding I'd made for a quilt I want to finish and it's not 2.5, but 2 inch!!
