I saw a quilt last month that was just awesome. Lady had created her own design and in it had appliqued flowers with trees, roots and such and had somehow "turned in" ....only thing I can call it the branches of it to give it a 3d effect of sorts.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about and know how it is done?

The only thing I can think of would be to sew strips along the long side, turn them so the seam allowance is inside, then twist them slightly before appliqueing to background.

Do you have a photo of what you saw?

No unfortunately not.

I did a really wonderful wall hanging of a tree in a class using something called HeatnShrink. It was applied to the back side of the tree fabric, then I sewed lines on it like the creases in a tree's bark. You then steam it (not touching the iron to the fabric) and it shrinks up about 1/3 leaving a wonderfully textured result. I then appliqued the tree to the background using a satin stitch. I couldn't believe how much like a real tree the result was! Does that sound like what you saw?

Were the branches popping out or sinking in to cause the 3D effect?
