Dear ArtsyOne,

Your member photo is so fascinating! The bright colors draw me to your posts every time. Can you tell us a little about the pattern and what size the quilt is?

bigsister63 02-11-2012 06:44 AM

You FMQ feathers are lovely! I am confised. Is this a quilt as you go quilt?. Or did you just quilt each block with batting and backing and then will sew together? I am courious as to if this a new method of quiltiung and putting blocks together.

fmhall2 02-11-2012 08:25 AM

I love your quilting. Your feathers are wonderful. I wish I could do that good.

Tink's Mom 02-11-2012 08:29 AM

That is just beautiful...I know that I've seen templates for the vines if you really feel that your free motion isn't good enough...but, it won't show as much and I think it will be just fine.

WisWis 02-11-2012 08:59 AM

Beautiful quilting-really inspiring.

jbj137 02-11-2012 09:01 AM

Very nice work and I love the blue. J J

Thanks so very much for your compliments!

To answer some of the questions: this is a QAYG, the sashing will be 1/2" finished.
I used templates for the feather quilting, it's not free hand! I wish it were. I can do vines, leaves, stars, flowers but no feathers. I'm practicing on them but they don't look good yet. I have been quilting around the flowers in the blue and it looks good so I think I will leave it that way. I still have to quilt the outer borders of the blocks, maybe meandering.

Wow! Your work is beautiful!

Halo 02-11-2012 10:20 AM

You done a fantastic job on these. You should be able to do the feathers. Just have faith in yourself. Go for it girl.

Annaquilts 02-11-2012 10:22 AM

Not too good? They look awesome. I'd say keep going. they ill be less pronounced on the print then on the white any ways. You have the hardest part behind you. Please post pictures when you are done.

AnnieH 02-11-2012 10:23 AM

Fabulous quilting. Maybe one day "'ll be able to do that. It looks so good.

Annie

That is absolutely gorgeous quilting. Wish you could teach me.

sewsecksy 02-11-2012 11:33 AM

Mooi(beautiful) first of all I think in the blue you should carry on the the feathers. That would just keep the theme what a wonderful job.. Originally from the Netherlands.

Sometimes when you look at pictures of blocks you've made it hits you: I thought what if I just stitch around the flowers in the blue fabric. So I did that on one piece and it's looking good. I don't know if I want to do that on all blocks though.

I think that is a great idea Anael. Just stitch around the flowers and wind your way around the strips. It would be like using the templates.

I can FMQ on template lines, but that is about it. I think it is great that you can do the leaves, vines, flowers, etc FMQ. I don't think I have the nerve to try it, and don't have time to practice either!

glenda5253 02-11-2012 11:48 AM

Your quilting looks GREAT! I also agree vines on the print would be perfect.

Beautiful quilting!! I would do stippling in the blue.
Just go ahead and do it! Your quilting is wonderful!

patimint 02-11-2012 03:30 PM

I think your quilting in the white area is so lovely that you don't want distract too much from it in the blue area. I agree with vines and large leaves. Can't wait to see it finished

CAS49OR 02-11-2012 04:30 PM

Your feathers look great! How about just stitching around the existing flowers and vines rather than using a template in the blue?

nstitches4u 02-11-2012 05:53 PM

I thnk you have done a beautiful job of free motion quilting.

callen 02-11-2012 06:24 PM

Absolutely gorgeous feathers. Fantastic .

breezyquilts 02-12-2012 08:03 AM

Your quilting is fabulous!!! I like the ideas of the vines and I like the idea of going around the flowers, both would be great.

nanbue 02-12-2012 08:44 AM

I think keep it simple. Perhaps evenly spaced lines or waves. So you won't distract from the feather and maybe use a white thread to tie it all together.
However when I am really stuck I make mock up. For you cut a block as designed with the blue and white (no feathers) and concentrate on doing something with the blue part. Stand back and imagine it with the feathers in place. You will see what scale is right, what feeling is right and what thread color to use. Maybe waves, or leaves on a vine or simple straight lines on a diagonal.

dd55 02-12-2012 09:46 AM

your quilting on the white fabric is beautiful. very intricate. i like the vines idea on the blue floral.

Anael 02-12-2012 10:29 AM

Thank you all and thank you nanbue! I never thought of doing that.

@patski: the featherdesigns I used are from Mary Nordeng.

debbieoh 02-12-2012 06:28 PM

As beautiful as the whites look I don't think you'll have any trouble making the blue as pretty

beatys9 02-12-2012 07:41 PM

Beautiful feathering! Can't wait to see the whole quilt :)

LadyElisabeth 02-12-2012 08:31 PM

Your quilting is beautiful. I agree with the others, a vine would go nicely in the blue.

annies-best 02-12-2012 08:47 PM

The white is sew beautiful what ever you decide you will be fine the white will get all the attention.
you do gorgeous work

SandyQuilter 02-13-2012 06:35 AM

Your feathers are beautiful. Try not to overshadow them. How about a simple scroll back and forth. I've seen this done and it worked really well.

patdesign 02-13-2012 11:13 AM

Lovely feathers, I agree with the poster who said outline quilt the blue flowers.:)

red-warrior 02-13-2012 01:51 PM

I love what you have done so far!!!! I like the idea of going around some of the flowers and vines in the blue....but I have never done it so do not go by me....I would feel bad if I messed you up.

JUNEC 02-13-2012 02:17 PM

What gorgeous feathers - I would do a simple quilting on the blue so it doesn't take away from the beautifully quilted white block

Wanabee Quiltin 02-13-2012 02:23 PM

You do beautiful work. Wow, if you are a beginner, then I can just imagine how you will be when you consider yourself 'good enough'.
