Watson ... your OBWs are going to be spectacular using that main fabric.

Using your pic, I patched them together, and am attaching two mock ups for you.
Personally, the coloured tris distract me from the beauty of the OBW centres.
Though I do like the dramatic effects created, with the black and lavender (is it??).
So who knows, I may change my mind on it.

Agree, it would be nicer to finish each hexie before joining together.
I have seen that accomplished with 1/2 triangles on the corners of the hexies.

Maybe you can doodle and figure it out with this triangulated graph paper?

Look for Bethany Reynolds, Hexagon Star Stack and Whack. They have 6-sided OBW's put together with triangles, but not making squares. Quilter65 made one here - https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...k-t198481.html

You can turn a hexagon into a square by sewing on triangles to four of the sides. Here's an example with that where two of the four blocks are rotated into the alternate position, which makes an interesting pinwheel shape with the background fabric.

I have been playing in EQ7. I have come to the same conclusion as everyone else. You can't make a square of a hexagon without adding extra to the two short sides. All the stack & whack & Kaleidoscopes are done with 8 pieces. These are easily converted to a square. Good luck with your project.

Thanks, QuiltE...do you think it would be better if the coloured triangle was the same fabric as what the OBW's are made from?

Platyhiker...that looks promising...I will get out my Tri Rex ruler and see if I can figure that out.

WATSON, I am confused with your request.....do you want “setting” ideas for the OBW HEXAGON or do you want the OBW HEXAGON to be cut into a square? OBWs are hexagons. I love working with hexagons but it does make a difference in what your request is. The 4 Patch Posie quilt pattern ( blocks are square) may be what you are looking for.

I already have all my OBW pieces cut out and sewn into 2 halves of a hexagon.
I wanted to be able to sew them together into one block and then turn that hex into something that can be sewn into a quilt. Therefore, the hex has to have some corners.
So, I guess I was asking how to put corners on a hexagon to make it square. I got that information, above.

If you have other setting ideas that include the full hex I'd be interested in seeing them.

That is an interesting setting and would make a lovely quilt, but they are not squares. They are rectangles.

Very pretty blocks Watson. Could you put a solid fabric square to make your two diamond blocks to come out square? I don't think I understand what you are wanting to do.

Watson, you need a 30 degree setting triangle, not a tri rex. Your hexies are 60 degree triangles. A square corner is 90 degrees. The tri recs are something like 55 and 35 degrees. Just use the 30 degree line on your ruler.
