I enjoy quilting but would rather get in the car and buy hubby a new shirt rather than repair or replace a button on one he already has

Ladies, Ladies, You are all good. Mathmatics-----Without the math and geometry there is no quilting. Consider yourselves very knowledgable being you do put the pieces together to form a quilt. Not all can do it.

I don't like to iron either. But, its not like having a whole basket of clothes to do. I like your pinwheels!

penski 03-14-2012 08:31 PM

i think that same thing sometimes !!!

slk350 03-14-2012 09:23 PM

You like the feel of fabric..LOL

When I was studying math, it was a bunch of rote exercises with no real practical application to the things I love. Now with quilting, it has very real applications to my very real world, because it gives me information that I want and need to know. It now has real world application. For me, that's enough to take it out of the "hate" category and put it into the "not so bad" category, because I need it for something I love doing, and not just managing my check book (boring!)

As for ironing, I used to face the same darn basket of clothes week in and week out. Wash them, iron them, put them in the closets, let them get worn and dirty and back in the laundry. Then start all over again. Boring!! -- to keep ironing the same clothes over and over and over again. But quilting is so different! Each new piece is a creation, and I rarely have to iron the same pieces twice, unless I have to make several of the same blocks. But even then, when that project is done, I'm on to a new project with it's own colors, designs, intricacies, drama, challenges. Never the same old thing week after week. That is what keep ironing fresh and interesting for me. It's just a different perspective on the kinds of tasks we used to do. And I like the new perspective!

Thank heavens for permanent press!

Cheers!

I'm with you. Hated math in school & don't mind ironing that much, I must confess. Love the colours in your blocks.

Annaquilts 03-15-2012 04:22 AM

It is addicting so we are hooked. But I know what you mean.

kelsunshine 03-15-2012 04:25 AM

I like math. Ironing, not so fond of that and hubby can't stand the smell of starch.
Your quilt is going to be beautiful. You must post a pic when its done.
Hope i can master points like that some day!

stchenfool 03-15-2012 06:13 AM

Ahhh, because it fulfills you! Just watchinng those pieces come together is therapy in itself!

pacquilter 03-15-2012 06:58 AM

You know it's funny..I don't enjoy ironing either, but pressing out my blocks is one of my favorite parts about quilting. Of course, when I'm doing as many as you are now, I do get a little tired too!

Mousie 03-15-2012 11:01 AM

oh, I have pondered this question over and over. I think it's one of those conundrums of life!;)

lol...yeah, whatever piepatch said, lol...
this is just another stinking way for my seventh grade math teacher to be right,...bless his soul ;)

i cant draw or paint.. no other art talents. but i can pick out colors, cut sew and turn out a beautiful creation made from cloth. It satisfies that creative self that the ironing and math seem unimportatnt in the long run.

quilter56 03-15-2012 12:11 PM

Because you can't wait to finish it. And see what you created!!

I love the quilting and piecing but am always looking for ways to leave out the parts that are not as much fun. There are wonderful ways to make pinwheels that are fast, accurate and fun. If you search on You tube you find many ways. Basting? I don't like that part much so I spary baste. Surely works better for me and is sooo quick. If it comes down to lots of pressing....music helps!! Even sing along.

For the same reason we take perfectly beautiful fabric , cut it all up into little piecies and sew them all together again. I am not a fan of math and especially no fan of ironing... but seeing those tidy units all pressed ... just makes me happy.

debtex 03-15-2012 03:46 PM

Oh, gosh... not 140 blocks! Just 35 blocks (5 x 7), but each has 4 little squares made of two HSTs sewn together... I don't know the correct terminology! But I ironed those seams open before I sewed them together into pinwheels. Every time I got one with perfectly matching points, I forced my husband to come admire it. Hehe.

I love the fabrics and finding the bargains, for my stash and quilting room tools. I love all my threads. I love my machine..I love reading about qulting, I love creating the project and the process is so satisfiying to complete each step...and then put it all together. I hate putting the quilt sandwich together...and basting but enjoy the machine quilting or hand quilting. Then giving the quilt to a family member and seeing their faces beam with joy for receiving a quilt from mom and grandma
