Odd borders
I have finished a scrappy log cabin quilt top. It is wide enough but I would like it longer. I wonder if putting 3" borders on the sides and 5" borders on the top and bottom would look awkward. Has anyone done this? Thanks in advance for advice.

My sister had one she needed longer and it looked okay. Give it a shot.

I am doing something similar on a lap quilt gift I'm making for DS & DDIL it is wider than it is long. Center of the back is an embroidered label area surrounded by framed photos. Borders for top/bottom will be the same as sides but different widths.

It's a design opportunity. How about adding an applique of a log house on the bottom with some pine trees and maybe the night sky on the top?

I frequently add another border like a strip of triangles at the top and bottom to make a square centre into a rectangle quilt. The extra strip can make it more than 2inch wider. It's a design feature. PM if not sure you understand.

Why not? A quilt does not have to be symmetrical. I've done it too, when adding another whole row of blocks was not an option.

Oh yes. I have done it many times, many ways. Just a solid piece of fabric, or piece it, have even done Applique.

I do that all the time, just like you described. Go for it!

Yep, I've made many longer as well. Saw this on the picture section just now thought I'd show you another option of border for just the top/bottom. It is piano keys with half log in corner.
