I got a good education at good old LHS but math was not my strong point then and it's worse now.

My I Spy blocks are 5" square. I want to use yellow, red and blue stripes. Would I cut them each 1.5" to equal the 5" squares?

I'm borrowing a quilt pattern I saw here, thought it was so pretty. The I Spy squares would be where they put the print. My biggest problem, I guess, is that I don't know what the particular pattern is called so can't look on'line for the instructions.

Thank you to whomever made this one, hope you don't mind that I borrowed your design.

This pattern is a warm wishes quilt. I am pretty sure you can google it and get the pattern. If not, let me know, I will search it out in my printed pages for you.

You would just divide the chosen main block pattern size into thirds (making sure the seam allowance is in there to get the total main block size to match) and strip sew it together. The rest is just the laying it out to get the pattern right.

If your 5" squares are unfinished, making the finished measurement 4.5", you will need to cut your strips 2" wide and 5" long to have three of them make a 4.5" finished square.

In the future, you should just post a link to a photo that is not your own.

I'm sorry that I apparently made a faux pas. I don't know how to make a link to the photos. My apologies to the person who's photo it was.

All you need to do is copy and paste the URL (web address up in the top bar of your browser) into your message. Just as simple as cutting and pasting a picture.

It is not just a faux pas to cut and paste a picture, you could inadvertantly be breaking a copyright which could put the board at risk. At risk financially and at risk of being here for us.

Thanks for posting this info. I probably would have done the same thing at some time in the future. Now I'll know what to do. We're always learning. That's why this board is so great.

Cande - you just gave me an idea for my I Spy squares.

You need to cut your strips 2" wide and 5" long

If it makes you all feel any better, it's my quilt up there, and I give permission to leave the photo there :)
I usually try to bookmark the quilts that interest me for future reference, but I am guilty of just click and save for myself too. Seriously, don't worry about it, I'm sure next time Cande will just post a link :)

Cande,
It is ok, everyone makes a little mistake when you don't know the rules. Don't be upset about it at all. I am sure that you see baren has given her permission to leave it. Bless your heart, don't worry. We are all nice people here.

Hi Cande - in the Warm Wishes pattern, the centre strip is wider than the 2 outer strips here's a link http://www.ashevillequiltguild.org/A...or%20Linus.pdf

:-D

Yea, it is supposed to be. I didn't actually follow a pattern or instructions for this, so my little strips are all the same size, but the white should be a little wider than the other two colours.

k3n 01-22-2010 10:08 AM

Sorry Mel - I didn't mean to imply that you'd done it 'wrong'!

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 01-22-2010 11:23 AM

ha ha, no, that's not even what I was thinking, lol!

Nice quilt!!!

Hi Cande,

As others have said, that's a Warm Wishes quilt. Here's a link to the pattern <http://www.quiltmaker.com/patterns/d...html?idx=5185_> and some info about it.

Even though Quiltmaker says the crib size is available on their site, it was not there recently when I looked for it. Finally emailed them...and they don't know why it's not there either :). I was happy to see the reply with the link to the Linus directions.

when i see a quilt that i like and measure the squres and they are 5 inches i add a quarter inch to each side to allow for seam allowance it ussually comes out right or i use a piece of scrapp material for the first square i make to make shure of how to make tham and that the acual ones will come out right

SSTeacher 01-23-2010 04:04 PM

Cande: I have made several Warm Wishes quilts over the quilt pattern on the Internet. My focus block was 6 inches square and the "rail fence" blocks were also a total of 6 inches. The strips for the rail fence were cut in strips measuring 2", 3" and 2". When put together it made a 6-inch strip and then I cut the strip in 6-in sections. The 3-inch strip was the middle strip of the rail fence. Very easy and it went together so quickly. If you send me a Private Message and give me your e-mail address, I will forward you a picture. For some reason I have not been able to download it to "my pictures" in order to post it here.

Cande, I hope this does not discourage you from making this quilt. And thanks for bringing this great pattern to our attention. It's easy but looks complicated. I love it when that happens.

cande 01-23-2010 05:58 PM

Once I got it through my thick head that I had to put the blocks together going down and not across, it worked out fine. It's a fun pattern and goes together quickly. Thanks to everyone for the encouraging words.

SSTeacher 01-23-2010 08:30 PM

Cande: I put my blocks together going across the row. It went together perfectly. I did not understand you putting the blocks together going "down." Maybe I did it incorrectly, but i turned out great. You just position the rail fence blocks in difference directions in order to make the "frame" around the focus fabric block.
