OH the Culture Shock
I didn't QUILT today. I tried sewing. You know; clothes! a dress! Do you think I could sew a 5/8 th seam????
I'm so programmed to the scant 1/4 inch my seam lines kept drifting. I started DRAWING the seam line on my cloth. GEEEEEESH! MaryKatherine |
Hang in there. It will come back to you. I used to be able to do the 5/8 th seam with no trouble. Bet I would have to reteach myself now, but it would come back. Drawing a seam line sounds like a good idea, actually...

I haven't sewn a 5/8" seam in such a long time that I would have to put a strip of blue painters tape on the 5/8" line on my machine to remind me to sew a 5/8" seam. I know exactly how you feel.

I had the same experience when I tried a 5/8 .... I used to just stick the fabric under the needle .. and could sew a 5/8 inch..... now after so many 1/4 inch... I had to put tape down to re- train my brain... And it still seemed like a huge seam.

Revolt!!!!!!!! I suppose I could redraw all the seam allowances and then cut a smaller one, but that is a lot of effort. Quarter inch seams aren't really good for garment sewing. They are more likely to fray with the stress of wearing a garment. Unless you are using a serger, in which case that is usually the seam allowance, but my serger is more like 3/8, so it is kind of a pain when you want a quarter. |
I bet that seam allowance looks huge! When I went from garment sewing to quilting I had a hard time getting used to a 1/4" seam.

LOL I had the same problem yesterday making a slipcover. Automatic 1/4 inch seams. When I realized what I was doing I just continued, turned the cover and made french seams. Will hold up better!

Kwik Sew uses 1/4" for knits, and even some wovens. 1/2" seams drive me NUTS!!

I recently made a very complicated dress as requested by a GD. I didn't have any problem - I think because I switched machines. The Elna does apparel and home dec, the 301 pieces and quilts. Otherwise, I could see it being an issue.
