I am falling under the spell of Batiks. Lately I have been looking at them with new eyes. (no not glasses. I already have those). I have been going through different sites just pondering them, and what they might be used for.

I am really in big trouble. There are so many to chose from. I will have to be a millionaire to get all of them.....ahhhhhhh!!!

Oooh, batiks are so much fun! I just signed up for Fat Quarter Shop's monthly batik club. They now send me 12 different fat quarters of batiks every month ($30). I got my first squishy yesterday, and they're gorgeous! Batiks are just beautiful!

Marjpf 01-24-2010 09:03 AM

Batiks are such great blenders. I love working with them.

mpspeedy 01-24-2010 09:18 AM

I think we all love batiks. The only problem I have with them is that I am a handquilter. They are more closely woven or the dying process makes them very hard to handquilt through at least for me.

Esqmommy 01-24-2010 09:19 AM

I always thought they were pretty, but didn't realize how beautifully they transferred into quilts until I made one. I love the depth and richness that they give to a quilt! Unfortunately, I always get sucked into buying wild patterned fabrics...I should stick more with the batik types, they really make the prettiest quilts in my opinion. I'm debating making an Irish Chain...maybe I can find some pretty batiks to use for it!

I have spent 2 hours trying to get a picture of my favorite batik quilt to transfer but Olympus and HP seem to hate each other.
Had to move the picture all over the place.

Beautiful quilt. I love batiks too. Sooooooo pretty.

mountain-moma 01-24-2010 12:55 PM

Oh that is just beautiful

amma 01-24-2010 12:57 PM

Batiks....My absolute favorite too :D:D:D
I will NEVER have too many of these beauties...
I just have the hardest time cutting into them!!!

Rose Marie 01-24-2010 01:02 PM

Thank you so much.
It came out a bit brighter than I wanted so I dont buy the bright batiks so much any more.
This is a very easy pattern. It uses only 3 1/2 x 2 inch pieces. 1560 pieces for a 78" x 90" quilt.

Esqmommy 01-24-2010 07:28 PM

Here's the batik quilt I made. I plan to make it again. Sorry it's a link, I can't find the original photo on my computer (and I'm soooo tired!!)

I'm with you Amma. I absolutely love batiks, and like you I want to be sure to use them well. So there they sit in my stash waiting to become something.

I am considering making a French Braid quilt (king size) for our bed and think batiks are the way to go.

Everyone of the batik quilts the members have shared are absolutely beautiful.

Bright is GOOD. I think your quilt is stunning. I know some people love the civil war reproduction fabrics, but for me, I love color, intense, saturated color.

Boston, did you see the quilt bobbinwinder posted?
There is a beautifal batik quilt for ya.

I used to be one of those CW ppl, in fact I still am but now I love Batiks AS WELL!!! It's funny, I used to think they were hideous and couldn't understand the attraction but now, I see their beauty! I'm about to bind a little wall hanging I made the other day, using some of the brightest batiks I ever saw and I love it (even if I say so myself!) Also I'm working on a PPd Storm at Sea, all in Batiks. The rooster in my avatar is Batiks mostly. So I guess you could say I'm a convert! :-D So I join you in your 'trouble'!

thismomquilts 01-25-2010 04:49 AM

My outlook on batiks - I do not like them - until they are in a quilt!! I know it's so weird, but I have to be convinced to put them into a quit. THEN I love 'em!! Two of my friends have made whole quilts out of batiks. They are some of the most beautiful quilts I've seen.

sewmom 01-25-2010 06:04 AM

the batik quilts shown in this thread are super! you all did a great job. I also love batiks and have used them in quilts. i haven't yet made a quilt using only batiks. someday, probably.

oldswimmer 01-25-2010 06:30 AM

I know what you mean.... Batiks are SO addictive!

joeyoz 01-25-2010 08:59 AM

I know what you mean. I have a Batik fetish. I LOVE Batiks. :-D :-D :-D

katier825 01-25-2010 09:17 AM

You don't have to spend a fortune if you are willing to shop around! Thousands of Bolts has many batiks around $5/yd. Also Marshall Dry Goods. Some of the other popular sites will have sales and sometimes everyday lower prices than the LQS would. Fabric Depot is one that you can usually get under $7 or so.

Naturalmama 01-25-2010 09:27 AM

I love love love batiks too - I dream of having a room lined with bolts of it..... only a dream. It is good to know where they can be found more reasonably priced. Love the pics!

Dkm 01-26-2010 08:55 AM

I'm hooked too. My problem is I hate to cut them up. Takes me a long time to part with them.

penski 01-26-2010 02:11 PM
