Oh NOOOO! Have you ever done this?
I am making a quilt as a gift for my sister, based on Bonnie Hunter's "Pine Tree Point." The top is directional with all the trees in the same orientation. Also, I'm using a flannel with penguins on it for the backing. That fabric also is directional. Yesterday I Elmer's Glue basted the whole thing together. This morning I looked at it and ARGHHH!! When you look at the top in the correct orientation, tree tops up, and then flip the quilt over from side to side . . . the penguins on the back are upside down! I am wondering if I would damage either the backing or the batting by gently peeling off the back and re-gluing it. Frankly, I'm leaning toward just quilting it as is, and calling it "interesting." What do you think?

I would lightly spritz it with water to make peeling the glue easier, and definitely correct the orientation, the poor penguins don't want to be doing handstands for the rest of their lives https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

You can't see both sides at the same time, unless it's being used with quilt flipped over at top...which brings those penguins into perfect orientation! I do this on purpose quite often 😊
I feel your pain. That's why I dislike directional prints. No matter how hard I try I always goof them up.
I would spritz a small section of the backing and see how easy it is to peel. If it is really difficult, I would quilt it as is. If it lifted quite easily , I would go ahead and remove and reposition. Good luck!

I once told a TV production crew, that if the mistake is not noticeable from 12 feet away. Most people will not see it either. You do because you are so aware of what you have created.
I would leave it the way it is like stitch678 if using and the top is flipped back the penguins on the backing will all be upright. Unless you tell your sister about the mistake she will probably never notice, it was a design decision.
I feel you pain. Noticed on a quilt I glue basted 2 blocks in a row were flipped and error was VERY noticable. Closer I looked. error in EVERY row. So I peeled, or is it pealed, the top off. Fixed the errors and finished the quilt.
Now with yours. I think I'd just quilt it and call it done. If it really,, really bothers you, take it apart. When I separated the top from the batting, I did not sprilz it. Spritzing will make the glue tacky. Let us know what your decide. Good luck. |
just say it's supposed to be that way!!!
You can steam Elmer's glue that has dried and it will loosen. I have done this many times when I glue basted the wrong way.
I would leave it and finish it. Just tell her she can use it either side.
Another vote for just leave it. As said earlier, the penguins will look fine if the quilt gets folded back. It's an intentional design decision especially if it is a large quilt.
I need more coffee this morning. Actually had to get paper and pen and draw a pine tree on one side, flip the paper and draw the penguin, and fold the paper down!! Total brain fog this morning!! LOL
I would leave it. I don't think that the backside and frontside have to match directionally. It'll be fine.
And another vote to leave it as is, grin about it and move on to the next projecthttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png
Yep. Design decision. Let that be your story and stick to it. I'd bet nobody will ever notice.
I would leave it. I think it is a better option if the top gets folded back.
Just own it! It was meant that way. When printing on two sided paper, you can choose to flip on the long side or the short side, You made an artistic decision to flip on the short side. Besides, I would LOVE to see penguins doing handstands!
Well friends, I've decided to just leave it as is! My sister is a very gracious and forgiving person. Besides, I've never made a perfect quilt yet -- why start now? Thank you all for your input!
If you were to turn the bed down, with the quilt turned back at the top, the penguins would be facing the right way. I think, lol. I would say that's why it was done that way.
I would leave it the way it is. I think your quilt will be perfect with the penguins flipping to perfection.
I like the suggestions to leave it as is since when a row of penquins are folded over the quilt they will be right side up. That doesn't seem to be your intent but I would see it as a happy mistake.
Just leave it!
