Oh, terrible drama!!
Possible stress. May have pain mixed in. Not sure what to do.
I have bought so much fabric it doesn’t all fit into my sewing room. I must not be sewing faster that I buy fabric. I may have to clean my sewing room. Maybe pick some of that fabric up off the floor. I bought 2 new shelving units. Hope that helps. I get SO much happiness buying fabric, getting it in the mail and looking at it. Just love it. |
There's a 12-step program for that. The first step is to get a bigger space. The other 11 steps are to buy more fabric to fill it up.

Here! Here!
Someone truly understands how I feel when I get to go thru the fabric at the Senior Center--and can't leave most of it behind. I go specifically on Thursdays to see what is still there and I bring it (mostly) home. As I'm going thru it at the center, I can see many different projects that it can be used for. LOTs of beautiful projects. Since we are in the second half of our year, I am concentrating on getting several quilts finished in time for Christmas--I have moved 1 to the top of the list for my pastor. He told in his last sermon about his experience with his Love Bug--us "older folks" loved hearing about Herbie and were laughing thru almost the entire sermon as we too were remembering our "trials" with Herbie. If you don't know Herbie, go ahead and look him up on the internet and you will know then. There is only ONe Herbie. He's getting his very own Herbie back. Hope he will have as good memories as I am having making it. I'm going to wrap it and give it to his wife with strict instructions that he can see it but CANnot open it until Christmas day. Hope to have it completed by the end of this month. Also making one for a soon to be new big sister and one for her soon to be baby brother to be born in December. Doing Ann & Andy quilts for them. See I just have to have all that fabric. I also make dolly clothes and clothing for children upto the size 8-girls and 3-boys (don't need to put in zippers). All clothing is given to Salvation Army; toys go to my church, Toys 4 Tots, & Salvation Army for their Christmas give-aways. So I really do need L-O-T-s of fabric. Well, I tell myself I need it--have 27 Full boxes in my Living/Dining room, 15 boxes in my bedroom and several more in the extra bedroom. Couldn't get to the center this week due to rain and my chair not built for any type of water--had to stay home and work on my wall hanging for the swap. It's almost finished. Just needs to be stitched together. Love your 12-step program Dunster. May I join, too? |
I have so much fabric that I don't unsew any messed up block. I make a new one and toss the messed up one. I feel justified as it was unfit to use. I haven't missed any block at all.

Hmmmm, maybe I shouldn't have purchased that purple fabric with elephants today!!
|
I just got a new order delivered today. It was a close out sale. I got most of it refolded and ready to add to the shelves, but at the moment it is still sitting on my cutting station. I figured it wouldn't hurt to let it 'relax' before putting it in it's home. I also picked out a few more patterns, which is what I purchased the fabric for!
I guess you could say that I'm preparing myself for the winter! :) |
Just remember when people have coin collections, they don't use those coins. So it might be with the fabric collections. Buying or acquiring it is its own reward.
|
Yep, lots of us just love collecting fabric. Whether we use it or not is another issue! Just make yourself happy.
|
I'm not buying that much fab now. Mostly neutreals for whatever. My problem is the free table at Project Linus. My body/hands gravitate to the yardage, almost a yard pieces. I have two groups that I go to and the smaller one...well the faciliator is really an enalbler. She knows I dontate several quilts each month so when she goes through the new donations she says Julile, this looks like kyou. I don't want to hurt her feellings so I take it.
|
I was down to a manageable amount of fabric and then received 6 boxes of fabric from a retiring quiltmaker (getting on in years). Beautiful stuff - I passed on about a box' worth to another lady I know who does charity sewing.
|
I must sew faster. 😩 my fabric acquisition is almost nothing..
Love your reasons Dunster ! |
It sounds exactly like something I could say! And I forget what I have so I buy it again.
|
I must say that my acquisition of fabric has slowed down a bit now that I pre wash everything before it goes in my stash. Pressing the washed fabric is not my idea of fun (I sometimes wonder if I could hire it out). So before I buy any fabric, I must deem it “pre-wash” worthy.
|
I have the same problem. I am going to try the 12 step program. Hope it works.
|
I have fabric in piles in several rooms, on bookcases and in closets, on tables and in bags on the floor. I didn't realize it was supposed to fit in the sewing room (ha, ha).
Since joining the Fabric Moratorium thread in the Challenges section, I do much better at not buying fabric just because it's pretty. |
I just love waiting for my purchases to arrive in the mail! Honestly it’s almost a let down when they arrive and they are unwrapped. The excitement of waiting and tracking my boxes is huge. I try to limit myself because I don’t have room!
My shopping at physical stores is very quick and very decisive.......I need x yards of Kona Snow or whatever so am in and out within minutes but I can spend hours placing an online order and loving every minute. |
Love to shop for fabric. I’ll take this and this and etc. Then it’s sticker shock. Yuk. Why did I do that again? Yep, fabriholic… Next it’s sew. Two weeks later…
Hopefully I learn from this. God, I need help. |
Today I went to the Senior Center to do some printing (it's Free there) and guess what I found in the needlecraft room. Nope not fabric but Quilt Magazines and LOTS of Patterns for quiltas and wall hangings and toys that are quilted and Christmas Stockings. I brought all but 4 home as they were duplicates and I didn't want to appear to be stingy. Not greedy either as the books had been there over 2 weeks and I had to stay home due to the rain. Now I have something to do when the next rain comes--finnd just the right pattern for my next ?????

Prewash and fold. Press when you are ready to use the fabric. It saves a lot of time. Some of my orewashed fabric will never, ever feel the heat of an iron, though.
I have one piece of fabric that I didn’t iron but just added to my stash when it dried. It bled terribly (although after boiling it with Dawn a few times, I *think* that was resolved). The crumpled texture of that fabric reminds me its weird, so that I will use it with caution (and probably check for bleeding one more time). When you say you have fabric that will never feel the heat of an iron, is that because it’s delicate or because it’s too pretty to cut? |

I knew when I read the original post that this would bring all us fabric collectors out. You all make me feel so much better as most of you have WAY more than I do, and my collection is impressive.
|
I fill my online cart with over 25 different fabrics, then whittle down to what I can't live without! I buy what appeals to me, mostly blues and teals, and they blend well together. I do wash the fabric before winding onto comic boards, which are working out wonderfully.
|
As much as I enjoy browsing in quilt shops, I find for myself I have to just not frequent them as much as I can't resist the temptations to buy. Once in a while I do stop in to see what is new out there and usually come out with "something".
Just me. |
Hahahahaha! I came to the board to get ideas on how to go through and remove fabric from my stash and found this.
|
I also have stash that is OUT of control. I will need 2 live times to get through it all. I have been doing real well at the fabric store, I have only been going in when I absolutely need something-filler or backing. BUT I went to a church sale and almost everything was .25!!!! How does a person leave that??? Someone said a quilter had passed and this was all her stuff. I only got 2 pieces of fabric-both 2 yard pieces- for .25 each. I got scissors, needles for my midarm machine, pantographs, 60mm rotary blades, seam rippers I had 2 bagfuls all for $8. I actually restrained myself very well I thought, because this woman must have been into everything, it stretched all the way across the long side of the fellowship hall. These kind of sales are my downfall.

I’m too busy laughing to comment! 😂😂😂

Now I have to rethink my quilts for the 2 of them--such is planning. :) |

I recently retired from being a homeschool mom (still a mom, but my baby graduated!) so I did some rearranging. In the end, I bought a gorgeous new giant cabinet for my sewing room (it was my dh's idea---truly!). Now that I can see my stash thru the glass doors, I'm hoping it inspires me to whittle it down in the free time that has appeared in my life. :)
