Oh, the things kids come up with.
My 11 year old granddaughter just got a new bed and her mother painted her headboard pink and purple, at her request. It's not my style, but oh well, she loves it and that's all that matters. Anyway, I was visiting the other day and she informed me that she needs a new quilt for her new bed. OK, I can do that, so I asked her if she had any special request. She politely informed me, and I quote, "Grandma I DON'T want anything "girly" like you made me last time. It has to be pink and purple, and I want soccer balls on it too" OK, well we can do that but I had to ask how pink and purple isn't "girly" to begin with? She informed me that as long as there are NO flowers, butter flies, tea cups or any other "girl stuff" it's not "girly." All I could do was look at her and smile. So now grandma is on a mission to complete a pink, purple, soccer ball non-girly quilt by Christmas. This is going to take some imagination. LOL

You can do it Grandma!

Pink and purple scream girly to me too but what do I know.:D

What a compliment to your work Grandma!! I am sure it will come out fabulous!
Look for geometric prints - stripes, polka dots, squares, cubes, etc.

They make camo fabric in pink...

Grandmothers can do anything! Just ask my grands. LOL
She's hysterical, and so sweet! Have fun making the quilt of her dreams. Don't you love it when they REQUEST a quilt of you? You know they appreciate your quilts when that happens.
Ok! How about Soccer balls and spools and Dresden plates. Maybe fans or hst. More of a simpler nature. Maybe do an illusion with pink and purple scraps with pink and purple sashings and borders.
What about animals prints in color. I have seen pink zebra strip that is very popular
She sounds like a doll!!!
Well I'm going fabric shopping next week so I'm sure I can find something that will work. I saw some pink soccer print that I want to use, then add some purple to the mix. I just thought it was funny how she asked for it. She was so serious and made sure that I know that "girly" is out. I sure am glad that she has a baby sister that I can still sew "girly" for. LOL Funny that camo was mentioned because she loves camo. I recently made her younger brother a backpack out of some left over camo from a jacket I made her mother last Christmas. She loves it and wants one of her own in purple camo, which is already on the list for Christmas this year.

Grandmas can do anything. You will find something and she will just love it. Keep us posted.
I agree, we Grandmas can do anything. You will find just the right combination of soccer balls, pink and purple and she will be thrilled. My grands always think I can "whip it up" in a minute! Haha. Don't forget to post a picture when done.
That is kind of funny - I'm sitting here smiling -
Now that she's told you what she does NOT want on it - maybe you can get a list of things from her that she would consider acceptable? |
Awwwww I have a granddaughter who was the same way,and I had the honor of making her a red and gold softball themed quilt. Red and gold are her high school colors, and she is a outstanding pitcher. Best of luck!!
What an exciting project. Please keep us posted on your project.
She sounds adorable - sounds like there are lots of possibilities for a pink & purple soccer quilt! Have fun!

My 3 year old DGD is very specific when it comes to colors - she likes pink - purple and blue. Not too specific, but I can see a trend here. Hope she still likes those colors when I finish quilting her twin-size pin-wheel and butterfly quilt, which was in Quick Quilts, I think, don't remember. I've been blessed with many, many senior moments, so you have to forgive my memory. LOL. I do know that both my DS and DDIL both loved the quilt, my DD as well.

Look on some of the 'modern quilts' sites and you can see how cool a pink and purple quilts can be, and never once see a teacup or fairy. Probably just what she's looking for!
LOL... Too funny! Your granddaughter certainly knows what she likes. :o
Did you see the photo on another thread of a splashy, modern quilt designed by a 17 year old granddaughter? It uses circles that could become soccer balls, maybe even pieced balls from soccer-print pink and purple fabric. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...n-t231706.html
This site has several online shops that sell soccer ball fabric.
http://search.myquiltshops.com/cgi-s...myqssearch.cgi Good luck. |
Glad to hear that she knows what she wants and she isn't afraid to say so. Guess you could take her shopping and let her pick out the fabric. Be sure to post a picture of the finished product!
I love that she is so definite in her thoughts though that will be a challenge for you! I bet you come through for her!
You go grandma. Have fun with it and I know she will love it.
I encountered a similar situation only I was to make a baby girl quilt that was feminine but not pink or purple (big sisters' favorites).
I remember making clothes for my granddaughter when she was little.... and the day she said to make the dress exactly like the pattern.... not ruffles or lace, etc. Gone was my little girl... :( She's 20 now, and loves the quilts I make her... no more dresses!

Had a similar situation. SIL asked me to make a quilt for my niece as her bedroom was sooo cold and my quilts are sooo warm. They were in the process of painting her room in a 'princess' theme. Asked my niece if she wanted anything in particular in the quilt. Her response 'just no hearts Aunt Kim...don't like hearts'! Couldn't even use hearts in the quilting! Cracked me up with her tone and how serious she was about that.

I love how children redefine things we thought we understood in the first place. I remember when my grandmother made me a pink dress and it had some blue on it as I recall and these ridiculous princess puff sleeves. I told her I hated girly dresses, but it I stuffed the princess sleeves with padding and wore pants underneath that I MIGHT be able to pass it off as a girly football uniform. She just laughed and laughed. She loved those high victorian lace collars and puffy princess sleeves.
I remember when my boys were smaller and they would be telling her some wild story about something they understood to be right...like when my 4 year old told her he named his frog Cracker cause he kept trying to climb out of his fist and he was gonna fall and crack his head on the sidewalk. Gramma was trying to, nicely, explain to Ty that he can't walk around in Oklahoma calling everybody Cracker. It just wouldn't be a good idea. Ty was convinced though, so in the end, Gramma called him Cracker too and then responded to the boys mostly with "you don't say." and she got educated on all the new lingo they came up with. Enjoy this time. You are making memories that little girl will never forget. |
