Oiling new machine
 

Hi, everyone-

I could really use some advice from those who oil mechanical machines. I have a new Juki and the manual says to oil it before using. I'm terrified to do this, for fear of getting oil on my quilt (not from spilling it, but from it leaking out of the machine somehow). Is there a trick to this? Has anyone had oil appear on a project? Was there a way to rescue it?

Can't help with that machine, but wanted to mention I have always been able to remove oil stains from fabric with Grandma's Secret Spot Remover:

It's a good thing to have on hand.

Follow your manual! I just oiled and cleaned both of mine, 401 and 2662. And lubed! I clean weekly or after using. See if you can pull it up on YouTube.

Always sew something besides a prized quilt after oiling. I usually just sew some paper towels, just to make sure!!

Yes, it's important to oil the bobbin area often. I keep a flannel rag next to my machine to sew on after each oiling. The oil comes off on the rag, and not on my project.

I do the same thing. I have a Juki also. I never had a problem.

I have the Juki 2010q and just put a drop of oil into each of the oil holes every 3-4 days, not every day that I sew on it. I do sew on a scrap fabric piece for a few seconds after oiling. Never had any oil migrate onto a quilt.

Same here. If I anticipate I will be sewing all day, I will oil it the night before and always sew on a scrap first in case there is any extra oil. I received a sample bottle of oil with a long spout, which makes it easy to just put in a drop or two. Did you get one with your machine also?

I have never experienced oil stains, they seem to wash out. And I've gotten oil on the fabric. It's a much finer oil than cooking oil, etc. so it doesn't stain.

I have a janome 1600pqc in my collection and that is a mechanical machine that needs oiling regular. Keep a spare piece of fabric and just do a few minutes of sewing on that after and any oil will go onto that and not your quilt. I don't have any issues unless I over oil. Just use the amount it says in your manual.

1. I've only over-oiled my machine a couple of times, and it only made a mess in the bobbin area, which is covered. I've never gotten oil on anything I've sewn.

2. The kind of oil you use for machines doesn't seem to stain fabric.

3. My husband has greatly honed my laundering skills by dumping something greasy on a nice dress shirt a couple of times a month. This is the best grease spot remover I have ever found. I buy it from Hancock Fabrics.
