How often should a person oil their machine?

Candace 07-13-2011 12:52 PM

What does your manual say? Every manufacturer has different recommendations.

Depends on use. See what your manual indicates. I was reading a Featherweight manual & was surprised at how often it said to oil the machine & grease the motor.

I don't have a manual. The machine was purchased at an estate sale. The lady said she had it sitting in her garage for years. A Kenmore (148370) shesaid she got in the 80s.

Here is a source for manuals. Recheck your model no. to see if you left a couple digits out.

As this guide suggest, if you are not sure where to oil, take the machine in for service & ask the tech to walk you through how to maintain your machine.

be careful. I have husquvarna and it only gets oil when I take it in

Each machine is different. I have a Janome and oil it when I finish a project (unless it is flannel or fleece) and I only oil it under the bobbin. My old Elna, I oiled after a couple of projects, but had a lot more places that need oil.

Thank you for the information! I guess I need new glasses! Went back and checked . The model is 148-19370!

Kenmore's usually have a red dot where the oil goes. Just a drop or two will go far. Too much and you will get oil stains on your fabric. Use sewing machine oil only-yes, there is a difference. (Do NOT use 3-in-1 or DW-40)

It really depends on how much you sew as to how often you need oil. So, it's hard to tell you exactly when. If it starts "chirping" at you, it is time NOW.

I am thinking that I would "error on the excessive" in that I would oil after about every 3 quilts. It is just oil, not expensive, and better too much than too little.
