the paper piecing class I finally took this morning and I have a great report ...I think this is my nitch for sure the lines don't have to be perfect and the points come out perfect...it is so easy and so fun to do...I definetly recommend a class if your able to take one because the whole thing makes sense to me now...well guess what I have planned this weekend.....paper piecing away...haha :D

Knot Sew 06-20-2008 03:31 PM

I think I need a class or lesson, no matter how much I read and look at pictures I don't get it. :D

mom2three 06-20-2008 04:03 PM

Isn't it great when your points match? I have always had trouble getting my points to match up. I taught myself to paper piece. I live to far from anyone who gives classes on it. I have made several paper pieced quilts and I have several more in the works. It is really addictive.

Have fun this weekend. :D

beachlady 06-20-2008 04:08 PM

I also am a hands on learner, so I guess I will have to take a class this fall or winter.

mgshaw 06-20-2008 04:20 PM

ALRIGHT!!! So no more problems with the wicked witch? (owner)
So glad you had fun and it was worth showing up a week early for !

hahaha...no she actually turned out to be rather shy and very friendly after all...the class was great as always I learned so much from each of the ladies in the class and the teacher was sooooo patient with us all...all in all it was a very successful class....

mommaB 06-20-2008 05:40 PM

I am hoping my local shop offers a class soon. I just finished a regular beginners class this week (as soon as I figure out how to post a picture I will !!!). I had a great time, and ended up with a very acceptable wall hanging. To me it seems paper piecing allows beginners to do a little more complex blocks..maybe wishful thinking?? Anywho, I'm dying to try it.

sondray 06-20-2008 07:40 PM

Congrats! Wish there was a class I could go to. I would love to learn paper piecing.

So glad you enjoyed the class. Keep us posted on any secrets you find out and can pass along.

Oh neat. Can't wait to see pics of all your pretties

Harmony 06-21-2008 06:31 AM

I had time to play with paper piecing a few weeks ago, and I was amazed at what professional-looking results you can get with just a little practice. Glad you had fun, and now you have a new "specialty"! Hope you'll post pics soon.

Hi there, I did a class last Tuesday as well and loved it. It does give professional looking results, so when I came home I got on the computer and McCalls site have great paper piecing patterns, hundreds of them.
You will love the site.

thanks for the tip I will go the site and check it out ...it takes me so little time to do a block it just amazes me a person could actyually get a project done quickly....I have Carol Doak's book 300 paper peiced quilt blocks it has so many cute designs in it it's the book we used in class.....this is definetly my fav. now...

sandpat 06-23-2008 06:11 AM

Oh, I'm with you, I love it! It is so much fun to do. I'm still learning, but just did hundreds of flying geese blocks (well...it seems like hundreds  )..they all turned out perfect!

tlrnhi 06-23-2008 06:15 AM

Great job!

Marcia 06-23-2008 09:20 AM

I LOVE to paper piece and am so glad that you learned. It will give you very precise piecing and is SOOO easy when you know how. Opens another whole world of quilting

user3587 06-23-2008 09:26 AM

I too love paper piecing. I have several of Carol Doak's books. I posted awhile back that I was going to do a paper pieced pattern by Judy Niemeyer. Well I purchased the fabric on Sat. The ladies who own a quilt shop in Midwest City, Ok are terrific. I had to have a total of 16 different fabrics. They helped me select 16 different batik fabrics. I can't wait to get started. It takes a day or two to get the paper patterns cut and sorted in the right bags. Judy is very precise. If you take one step at a time and do exacting what she says, I see very little problems. Of course I'm sure I will find 2 or 3 (I know me). I have to have this finished before I pass on to the other side (hopefully from old old age). I told my DH I wanted this quilt draped in my coffin. This is all in fun so please don't anyone take this too seriously. I was told this is one paper piece project that you do a block or two at a time. Now if I could just get my working, paying job to give me more time off------fading out -------- back to realitity. Lunch break is over, got to get back to work.

retrogirl02 06-23-2008 02:59 PM

OOOOH that's so cool granny cat! I LOVE the color& patterns. I tried my first paper piecing recently, no where as nice as your patterns but found I had an easier time than expected. Plus, it makes triangle piecing SO much more fun than before!

quilterpat 06-23-2008 04:39 PM

It is fun to do, and they always turn out so nice. You either love it or hate it. Fun to do and easy to learn. You always sew from the back side. You sew on the lines of the paper. It will be gorgeous when you are finished with the whole project.

Granny Cat 06-23-2008 04:46 PM

what I loike about it is it takes alot less time to do a block it took me about 45 min to do one block so I figure I could get a quilt going in no time at all...sometimes i like to get a project completed quickley ....with paper piecing I don't have the tedious task of all that cutting first you just get going and the pieces don't have to be perfect to come out perfect...haha

Millie 06-24-2008 12:16 AM

  My points are never as Iwould like them to be and paper piecing seems to be the answer. I have been saving articles, etc on the subject and it seems such a practical way of getting a better finished product. Can't wait to try it.

Barb M 06-24-2008 12:28 AM

Ooooh, i absolutely love your second block!!!! And what i love even more, another die-hard paper-piecer has been created!!!!!!! lol lol :)

user3587 06-24-2008 02:02 AM

I have a lap quilt I made with Carol Doak's paper piecing but I can't get the picture to post. I've followed the directions but still nothing. It's a jpg file and it's not real large, but still nothing.

reneebobby 06-24-2008 02:17 AM

Wow I'll have to try this paper piecing soon and granny love the second one too. Great color choices.

gcathie 06-24-2008 09:49 AM

I love paper pcing. Hard sometimes to find a complete pattern.
I have found them at Keepsake in New Hampshire.
I would like to share my last pc. not backed or quilted yet. thinking about how to finish.
It is called Wandering Stars and by Judy Niemeyer Quilting.
My sister told me she is very difficult and I almost did give up, but once I got ahold of the technique it was easy. I am a self taught pcer'
Hope you don't mind my sharing

I thought I would show you a lap quilt I did with one of Carol Doak's paper piece patterns. I had fun making this. The blocks are her's but the layout of the quilt was mine.

Granny Cat 06-28-2008 04:08 PM

Hey Okie look at those perfect points...that is a beauty Thanks for sharing...that encourages me because I have about 10 blocks done to make a table runner and I wondered how I would assemble the thing...I absolutly love Carol Doak's patterns and her paper have you tried any of her paper?....it tears like a check just so smooth and it is so easy to sew over just really nice and not bad for the price...

user3587 06-28-2008 04:20 PM

Yes I have. I used it on this quilt. It's the only one I've used. I tried one that was transparent. Hated it.

blahel 06-28-2008 06:28 PM

Your quilt is beautiful Okie..i have been thinking of trying one of Carol Doaks patterns, so which pattern and or book did you get that pattern out of and was it hard as i am a newbie...

user3587 06-28-2008 07:12 PM

It's pattern #166 from her book 300 Paper-Pieced Quilt Blocks. It comes with a CD. I thought it was easy. At first it seems awkard but once you get a rhythm it goes pretty smooth. Her instructions are pretty easy to follow. Be sure to get the added quater inch ruler that is mentioned. It makes is alot easier. I don't see how you can do it accurately without it. I recommend this technique to anyone.

that ruler is so cool I have to say I really enjoy quilting since I found paper piecing...it goes so smooth and comes out so good every time I never have to seem rip which was my specialty until now...lol
