I went to wal mart and saw some beautiful white fabric...it is 100% cotton and was only 2.47 a yard..so I quickly bought 5 yards..was so excited!!
I use white a lot on the backs on my baby quilts...when I got home I was feeling of it and looking at my great find..Then....I noticed on the selvage it had..insulated..??? I had bought lining for curtains!!! I washed a piece and it washes good and doesn't shrink much at all.. So do you think I can use it in quilting??? The bad thing is when I got home they had cut me a yard too much so I had to go back and pay for the extra yard..Now I have 6 yards..!!!

Brenda M 01-19-2011 04:00 AM

I don't see why you couldn't use it since it's 100% cotton and what a great price!! Give it a try!

crashnquilt 01-19-2011 04:02 AM

I would say it depends how it feels next to the skin. Also, if it is insulated it may make a quilt too hot. I would lie down and drape the fabric over me for a while and see how it feels. If all is okay, GO FOR IT.

Beebee 01-19-2011 04:18 AM

Wow.. you may have made the discovery of the century! You will have one very warm quilt.

diannemc 01-19-2011 04:23 AM

It said insulated..rain proof?? Water kinda of bounced off of it but is ok after it is washed??? Don't think the insulation is for retaining heat???

cjomomma 01-19-2011 04:44 AM

I don't see why not. I used curtain fabric in a quilt and it came out great. It was the only fabric I could find a certain color in.

zennia 01-19-2011 04:53 AM

I think it would make a nice warm quilt. You may have given us all a new idea. I wish my Wal-Mart still had fabric. I really miss it.

CarrieAnne 01-19-2011 04:55 AM

I say use it! I think it will me very toasty...I think insulated means retaining heat. I wonder if you got rubber sheeting by mistake? Is it kind of rubbery on the back? JoAnns has it in white.

SuziC 01-19-2011 05:23 AM

Great price for 6 yds. I would go ahead and use it

No it does not have any rubber on back..I can't tell it has anything on it..Except when you put water on it..It beads up..till it gets real wet..Does that make sense?? This is what it says...
guaranteed roc-long rain no stain insulated lining

It looks like polished cotton till washed then it is like regular cotton.

Thanks everyone!!

Holice 01-19-2011 06:55 AM

i would be concerned abut it and the chemical which akes it insulated. so many washings may be required.

lovingmama 01-19-2011 07:04 AM

This may would be a great outdoor quilt. Camping, fishing etc. since it repels water.

faithsmamaw 01-19-2011 07:13 AM

it may be stain treated some fabric for furniture does that when it has been treated to resist stains

Candace 01-19-2011 07:29 AM

I would be worried about the chemicals in it that make it water repellant-against a baby's skin. I'd find another use for it.

diannemc 01-19-2011 07:31 AM

Ok I looked it up...

I would be concerned about the chemicals and a baby breathing them. I think a camping quilt would be a better use for adults.

tmg 01-20-2011 03:33 AM

It may work well in coasters.

diannemc 01-20-2011 04:47 AM

Well after thinking guess I will use it for what it was made for lining for curtains...It sure is pretty and is even prettier after washed! Or backs for Table toppers??

supergma 01-20-2011 07:08 AM

I would hesitate to use this for a baby quilt. What kind of chemicals were used to make it insulated??? Also, have you tried needling it? It might just resist your needle and make it hare to quilt if you hand quilt.

arline423 01-20-2011 08:42 AM

If you have washed the fabric, and it still looks and feels good, it should be fine to use. You have received another jewel for your crown for your honesty. Bless you!

IBQUILTIN 01-20-2011 08:53 AM

Its probably intended for a curtain lining, which would help keep cold air out, and cool air i. Should not be a problem at all. Great find

SittingPretty 01-20-2011 08:55 AM

I think your idea to use for table toppers would be good. Also, for place mats or any other item where a waterproof backing would be good. How about a shower curtain quilt?

nursie76 01-20-2011 08:57 AM

I think this would be ideal to use in the main part of a place mat or table topper or maybe potholders too as it is stain resistant. I don't know that I would use it in a baby quilt, but probably would in any other adult quilt, especially since it is pretty.

Quiltbeagle 01-20-2011 09:01 AM

I was wondering why it's cotton yet says you're to use a cool iron on it? I don't think I'd use it for a baby quilt either, but it has lots of other uses and I'd say you still got a great bargain. I'd use it as backing for the window valances that I really need to make and have been putting off for WAY too long, lol...

granny6x13542 01-20-2011 05:38 PM

Prior to quilting taking over my life, I made custom draperies and bed spreads. I would not recommend the drapery lining for a quilt since it does have special chemicals in it to make it no stain. Even washing it does not remove this. My drapery workrooms have a problem with the different chemicals used in the drapery fabrics and linings and some actually wear surgical masks when they are working with the fabric.

Great idea!

diannemc 01-21-2011 01:32 PM

Update!! I talked to someone and they said not to use on a baby quilt..They the chemicals would be hard to wash out...Guess I will save it for something else...

drgranny 01-23-2011 11:54 AM

when drapery lining has insulated backing it means that the sun won't deteriorate it as fast as regular fabric and that it keeps cold air that sneaks in around the windows from coming into your room. The fabric holds the cold air in the space of the drapery covering. Does this make sence? I used to make draperys.

Jennifer22206 01-23-2011 11:59 AM

oh I don't see why not! I actually need to make some curtains for the downstairs, so I'll have to see if my WM carries it. It's a little drafty down in one room.

Great find - thanks for sharing!

plainpat 01-23-2011 12:05 PM

Go ahead & use it.Remember back in the day, our Grmas used sheets, blankets, newspaper etc.....I've had Ron Loc drapes & they lasted forever, washed great & looked like regular fabric. BTW....great buy!

biscuitqueen 01-23-2011 08:35 PM

lots of pot holders----sorry bad joke., but it would make a great bed top mattress, maybe for the raised mattress in the tent. Or for guests on a raised mattress

Roc Lon has been around forever, very dependable fabric. The rain no stain had a treatment that would keep the lining from staining when it got wet, back in the days when we had open windows, and condensation on glass from heat against cold glass. Once you washed it you pretty much removed the tratment and it should behave just like real cotton. Enjoy your find!
