So I posted on here a while back that my DS wanted a football quilt. I have drown and sckethed and drawn and sketched and finally cut all the pieces out...whew! Now time to start sewing and I'm freaking out!!! All the negative thoughts in the universe are pouring into my brain like niagra falls! What if he doesn't like it? What if I cut wrong? It will never look as good as the pic in my head? I'm now panicing cause the red now cut looks more maroon than red! Just had to get that out my DH thinks I'm nuts!

You should not make this if it makes you crazy. Your son will love it because you made it and you want only love to be poured into this quilt.

I understand completely. When I made the quilts for my son's I was freaking out too! Till my oldest son came in to my sewing room and ran his hand lovingly over the quilt I was making him. I could tell he was very excited to get it. My other son told me that his quilt is incredibly important to him because Mom made it. I am willing to bet your son will love it!

cjomomma 09-02-2011 07:51 PM

Don't worry about it! We all have our fears with each quilt we make so if your nuts then so am I.

BETTY62 09-02-2011 07:51 PM

Quit worrying and start quilting. He's going to love it because it's going to be made with love for him by you.

The quilt will be beautiful and he will love it. This ALWAYS happens to me. Not sure why, but it does. I have been known to even go and buy another fabric only to go back to the original. So just get going, and all work out. We are all a little nuts when we are going from our thoughts and not from a pattern.

Just have fun!

Measure twice, cut once...

Find really cool backing fabric too. If he doesn't fall in love with one side, he has the other side...

I made my grandmother a puzzle piece quilt. I used the "fruit ladies" fabric on the back. She loved it but she was also more excited about the back than the front!!

I agree with cjmomma, I have to set up a guard at the door so the doubts and fears that try to sneak in are vanquished. Oh, yeah, and I'm nuts too :) How's that for imagery?

You know, sons are a wonderful thing. They always cherish whatever their mom's make and no one will be able to top it no matter how much they try. No worries, be happy and quilt.

SueDor 09-03-2011 05:06 AM

Stop thinking! It is coming from his mom, he will love it!

chelgvns 09-03-2011 05:12 AM

I love u ladies! So thankful for all the encouragement. I started last night constructing the strips and sewed three of the strips together with sashing. Its not terrible so far. My ds came in this morning and he dosent know I've finally started it and said that how I want mine! SCORE!!! Hopefully I will get done and quilted b4 his bday in october!

TrenbeathRanch 09-03-2011 05:15 AM

If you're still worried after the top is complete, there is still a fix...make sure the quilting draws the eye away from whatever is making you uncomfortable. Trust me! Quilting can either compliment or camoflauge, and the finished product will always look marvelous. Do you quilt yourself? If not, find a LAQ who has enough experience to massage any "hmm's". Good luck!

sewmuchmore 09-03-2011 05:57 AM

If we all could remember "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." I can see you over came the fear!! and son is going to love it. LOL :thumbup:

I was thinking that the backing...nowhere near to being ready for that...could be flannel or fleece or something fuzzy and warm textured. Is this harder to quilt or something special I have to do to accomplish this!

amyjo 09-03-2011 06:17 AM

flannel backing will make it very warm and cuddly especially if you tie it instead of quilt.

iwillquilt 09-03-2011 06:21 AM

Quilts never look like I think they will in my head. Usually they are much prettier. I'm glad your son spotted it and commented happily. Now you can relax, enjoy the construction and know he is going to love it.

TrenbeathRanch 09-03-2011 06:29 AM

Flannel makes a wonderful backing...I won't use anything else for lap throws. Nothing special to do at all, just treat it as you would any other backing fabric. Fleece is a different animal, however. It's really stretchy and you need to ensure that your LAQ stabilizes the quilt BEFORE applying the side tension.

SharBear 09-03-2011 06:48 AM

next time you are freaking out a little just say (outloud works best!)

"Thank you so much, itty bitty committee, but you may be quiet now."

The itty bitty committee are the negative thoughts you are hearing. Sounds silly but it takes all the power away from the negative thoughts!

EagarBeez 09-03-2011 09:11 AM

I have had a similar experience. I asked my sister about colors, she made a choice. I went to a fabric shop on a trip DH and I planned. I did not see anything that I think she would like. I was going to walk out of the store, but, DH found the perfect fabric. Got home, send pics to my sis, she told me...that's a lot of flowers, can you put something more country in it. I decided to make a log cabin, made 2 blocks and she loved them. Go ahead and make the quilt for your son.

tazzyjj 09-03-2011 09:29 AM

LOL Chill out lol it'll come to you!!! lol mercy sakes!!!

Looks like your freaked out for nothing. :-)

knlsmith 09-04-2011 08:13 PM

Just remember... It is inly thread and fabric. No one is bleeding ( as long as you cut carefully :D) or dying.

That being said, I find my family is blind to the mistakes that shout out to me. Sounds like you have already worked very hard and I believe you can do it! Take a deep breath, maybe walk away from it for a few days, and you will be fine. You're going to do just fine! :)
