I'm very new to quilting so excuse me if this is a silly question. Is it possible to use an old comforter for quilting, ie a new quilt top and using the rest as batting and backing? I have 3 boys and their taste in characters change quicklly and also they grow up so fast so if I could reuse anything its a bonus.

No, not at all, quilting is all about using what you have on hand. This is the way quilters staerted out years ago.

I am currently working on making a duvet cover for our king size bed. I will slip it over the current duvet and can change it out when needed. (Or when ever I get another quilt made for it! :)

The comforter may be too thick to quilt. Would probably work if the quilt is tied.

I agree that you can use anything for quilting. Just check that you can fit it under your machine. Mine has a extra high lift on the pressor foot but a lot of machines don't have that kind of clearance.
