Old fashioned quilt
My cousin has opened a respite house for care-takers. It is an old carriage house, quite antique-ish. Beautiful. I want to make a quilt for the home but want something "old fashioned". And of course, the mind goes blank. Any suggestions? Probably a throw size, not a bed size.

Log Cabin quilt comes to mind for old fashioned.

This can be looked at 2 ways. Old fashioned as in fabric or in pattern. Lots of star patterns come to mind Ohio star, friendship star, Lemoyne star. How about a dresden plate in 1930's fabrics? A simple 9-patch or 4-patch done in the right fabrics would give the "old fashioned" feel you are looking for and be easy to make, maybe even more than one!
Good luck to you and your cousin. |
I agree with Kathy’s, in the old fashioned feel will come from fabric choice as much or even more than the pattern. Civil war reproduction, 30’s or solids (like Amish quilts) will work. Then any classic pattern (stars or log cabin) will look old fashioned.
No matter how classic the pattern, a modern print or batik fabric will not work. |
I love old fashioned stars in a quilt. A Missouri star or Ohio Star would be my idea of old fashioned.
|
I think or a rich golds, blues and greens of a log cabin in civil war fabrics. But you will want to go with the interior colors. If they are light and airy, 30s fabrics are the way to go.

log cabin is my fav
|
double wedding ring - irish chain - log cabin - jacobs ladder. The right fabric could make many patterns "feel" old timey
|
Churn dash blocks equal "old timey" for me.
|
I also love Log Cabins and Ohio Star. But there are so many lovely patterns.

this one is black flannel background with wool appliqué it is called a Backyard Gathering from Lisa Bonegean i don’t know why I can’t find the pictures of the white ones- I made two twin size for that Connecticut house |
Sunbonnet Aue was the first thing that came to mind for me.
|
Monkey wrench always makes me think of the past.

Any pattern that has been around since my grandmother's days would work like Churn Dash, Log Cabin, 4 or 9 patch and there are many more. It also helps if you use the right fabrics such as Civil War or Repo 30's. Good luck to you and your cousin on this adventure. Also, you could look up on Pinterest and type in vintage or old fashion quilts.

Definitely use civil war repros....

Don't forget to use real thin batting , like quilters dream's "request", then dampen it to give it that old fashioned krinkle look as an added touch to your old fashioned patterns and fabric.

I think a log cabin to . its a beautiful quilt , and you can lay it out in so many ways .

Dresden plates, Ohio Star, Sunbonnet Sue, School Hse quilt.

I love old fashion quilts but I agree that the fabric used is the most important thing. Good luck!
