Old Pattern "Handyman's Dream"

Has anyone done this pattern Handyman's Dream by Four Corners from the book Hook, Line and a Hole in One, copyright 1994 ? Here is the website http://www.fourcornersdesigns.com/bo.../book2350.php3 I found this book at a yard sale but it has water damage. Still the pattern would be perfect for my Dad. He is a woodworker and handy. The instructions call for iron on then machine applique. Can this pattern be adapted for needle turn applique? Has anyone tried this?

It shouldn't be a problem. I would add 1/8 - 1/4" around each cut out for needle turned applique.

I agree. Any applique pattern can be done by needle turn or machine applique. Just remember to add your seam allowance to all the applique pieces.

I always convert machine applique patterns to needleturn.

How good are your needle turn skills? The pieces look fairly difficult with many tight inside corners. I think fused machine applique would be easier.

Some of the pieces would be easy enough with needle turn, but look at all those saw teeth! I would at least use a non-raveling fabric for that part, like micro suede, and not attempt needle turn. Cute pattern, by the way.

I love the idea of microsuede. In fact you could mix many different types of fabric into this quilt....flannel, denim, suede, as dunster said and others.

If the pieces are too small, you can enlarge them and then add the quarter inch turn to make them easier.

Thank you all for your ideas. I think i would have to enlarge the pattern in order to do needle turn applique. Would it look weird to embroider the saw teeth and the drill bit?

Nope. It would look great.

I agree, embroidering the saw teeth would be good, or use rickrack. I made a wall-hanging for my brother and used fusible and edge stitched but if this will be a quilt the needle turn would maybe be sturdier. I can't see what size you intend to make.

I'd say have fun and try many different techniques on this unusual pattern. You will have created a 1 of a kind quilt then for sure.
