Old quilt: is it valuable
 

In an other forum there was the question if an old quilt from about 1900 is valuable and where can one get informations?
It's a Double Irish Chain Quilt, Ohio Amish People the information says!

You will have to pay for an appraisal to find out. I'm not being rude, that's just the way it is,

It is valuable only for the fact that it is old, but I think there are many quilt around from the Amish, they were and continue to be prolific quilters. I think that the value is just like beauty, it's in the beholder. It also depends on the story that goes with the quilt, who made it, who owned it , etc. The best place to get some information about Amish quilts would be the People's Place in Intercourse, PA. They are a museum of Amish quilts.

I think you're right, mamagrande. The value would be in the provenance of the quilt. If it was made by or for or used by someone of historic significance, it might be valuable. Some of it will depend on the condition of the quilt also. But you do need to get an appraisal to get any idea of value. However, even with an appraisal, it's basically worth what someone will give you for it.

I have a Civil War Era quilt top. I had it appraised. ($25) It has a few issues, she appraised the top at $100.00, with the issues fixed and hand quilted. She said it would appraise around $600.00.

Unfortunately there are quite a lot of "old" quilts around and their value is mainly in the memories and family history. The quilt selling market is very "soft" right now so values are depressed and a of the next generation just don't want the"old stuff". Antique shops are getting very full and not moving much so it is a great time to buy but not to sell.

I am curious how old a quilt must be to be considered "old". I have a signature quilt with dates in the 1880's, along with information on the birth dates of each person, who they married, and how each was related to my dad. as far as I know all the ppl were Mennonites living in and around a small town in SE Iowa. Am i safe assuming this is an "old" quilt. Condition is perfect (never used).

With textiles (and furniture) I always applied the 100 year rule. 100 years old or older = antique
Less than 100 years old but more than 50 I considered vintage.

According to this article a Vintage quilt is anything from the 1930s to 1965.
An antique quilt is anything 100 years old or older but she is also considering anything form the 1920's an antique.

However, even with an appraisal, it's basically worth what someone will give you for it.[/QUOTE I have had 2 quilts appraised and they were done by the AQS which is American Quilters Society they were not old quilts but judged on workmanship and the shows they had been in one was appraised for 900.00 dollars in my avatar the other for 1200.00 but it had been published in a magazine and in a quilt calendar and I do not remember what the cost was but it was done through our quilt guild
