Old sewing basket find!

Went to an auction today of a lady's estate who died a few months ago at age 99. I got it for $15 and couldn't wait to see what was in it! Lots of pins, most were rusted so I will try to find a vintage pin cushion to put them in. There were several packages of needles, 2 packages of snaps, a package of hook and eyes, an old pair of scissors and also 8 "mending kits" from hotels and casinos. Also found a set of knitting needles and several crochet hooks. It contained multiple wooden spools of thread and several vintage metal thimbles and one that looks ceramic? maybe. There was also an old checkbook box FULL of old buttons. I'm decorating shelves in my sewing room with vintage sewing notions so I'm loving this! It's so much fun to go through stuff like this.

Sounds like you scored a fabulous treasure. Imagine the travels of that sewing box.

I love old sewing baskets. It really feels like a treasure when you get one that's filled with vintage examples of the tools of homemakers of the past. But there does seem to be an abundance of hooks and eyes and snaps!

Wonderful find - I've gotten so much vintage sewing stuff in drawers of the sewing cabinets I've purchased.

How fun! I have collected old sewing things for many years. I have most of them collected into a drawer in the spare bedroom. It is so fun to go through them once in a while. It is so special because of my love of sewing. I wish I could think of a way to display them. They are just too varied to be able to collect them all into one place, except a drawer. I did have a pink woven sewing basket with a wooden lid that attached with pink cords. It had a floral painted top. So cute. But, when my niece wanted to sew, I bought her a machine and filled the basket with things she needed I had seconds of for her.

I have a basket that belonged to my grandma that she had tole painted on the top. When I started quilting, she wanted me to have it. Unfortunately, the bottom was made out of some kind of pressed board and it crumbled so now I need to either figure out who to put a new bottom in it or find someone who can. What a lovely gift you gave to your niece and I'm sure she appreciated it.
