I have used old thread without any problems. I'd make sure it's as clean and dust free as possible.

Threads can still be very good although old, some brand new threads can be bad. Age isn't the deciding factor. Do a tug test, if it's strong enough it's usable.

I've had "rotten" polyester thread - which did surprise me -
