Old Threads: Is It To Late To Add Your 2 Cents Worth?
 Ok, what I'm asking is...I've went through the main menu where you find nothing but thread after thread, after thread! The titles and soooo many page numbers! I love scrolling through and looking at all of the interesting threads that have been posted through the years and to be honest many of them have helped me in some way or another. Well, the thing is I find one I like and want to say something or ask a question BUT....it was posted like in 2011 or 2006, 2009 or earlier...you got the picture I'm sure. Well, is it to late to say anything? I'm sure I'd feel stupid if someone is still subscribed to it and then suddenly out of the blue gets an email and they'e saying..."What in the world"?! What would you do?? :o
If I go through a search and find an old thread, I PM the author of the info... And I reference the thread by providing a link.
I send a Private Message referencing the thread. If there is no response they may not be a current active member. Just what I do....no right or wrong way.
Just had to say how much I love your avatar. Beautiful scene!
I try not to comment on threads that old I suggest also a PM
Yes you can I got a comment on a thread recently that I posted almost a year ago, If you are subscribed you do get notifications if you want to, and people can always look up things they posted under their profile
I have to chuckle when someone comments on a picture of a quilt that was posted several years ago. Then several other people, not realizing that it is an old thread that was suddenly brought to the top, comment also. There's no harm done, sometimes it gives new life to an older quilt, and gives new members a chance to see it. Of course if the old post you want to comment on is one where someone is asking for help on something, you're probably too late to actually be of help. If you have something new to add (a new technique, for instance) it's probably better to start a new thread in that case.
I probably have been guilty of that... I'm still learning about all the ins and outs of the QB... I thought I have figured it out when the changed the format/website and I am still learning this new one! Go figure. LOL! :o

It's really up to you!!
This has been discussed many times before, and it's been made clear that there is no policy saying you can't post a comment to old(er) threads. As someone already said, sometimes it's good to see an old thread come back active again ... and it lets others to see something they might never have seen in the past. Similarly, it's important to remember, that some unsubscribe from older threads. So if you are directing your comments towards someone, they may never see them. Likewise, they may not get the PM if no longer active on the Board. |
The thread might be resurrected and move to the top of its forum, but unless you (re)subscribed to that particular thread after the board change over last November, you won't receive any notification of a recent post even if it had been on your "watched" topics list.
(can't say if it would work that way if you were the OP) But I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. |
I'll do it, because I often use the search function! And I love when an old thread of mine is commented on! I think it's great. If QB didn't like it that way, they would lock the thread after a certain amount of time!

And like the previous poster commented, if QB cared, they'd lock old threads. I'm sure they don't. It keeps our archives a vast storage of ideas. |
Comments are great on older threads, but if you have a specific question, I would send a PM because the original poster may not even know that the post has resurfaced.
Another thought on old threads .... actually on all threads!
READ them right thru to the end. Often times, as posts are made, the questions are answered, or the original intention of the thread takes a complete turn. Prime Examples ... what is the name of the pattern? do you have a link to it? How many times has those questions been answered and yet it is repeatedly asked? |
Everyone has helped so much on my question! Now I shall search, read and comment! Thank you everyone!! :)

I also appreciate comments on my threads, even if they are old. As you probably have noticed, we are getting new members every day, and to them, all the posts are "new". I usually check my profile every week or so for new posts to threads I have started and I always try to answer questions when asked, no matter how old a thread is.
I think it is good to post to older posts, doesn't bother me-brings back that post as a reminder or to others who hasn't seen it. All good I think.
I love getting notifications to old threads I'VE posted, as well as threads I've commented on. Sometimes they regarded a project I wanted to do and forgot about, or sometimes I still have issues with something and love new ideas. and -- if it's a compliment on something I've made it's never too late to receive that! So in my opinion post away! If you want to ask some individual in the thread something it's best to PM them as they may have unsubscribed from that thread or may no longer be a member of QB. I like the idea here to give them a link to the thread you are PM'ing about.
I will only post on an old thread if I think what I am posting is valueable enough to the community to bump the thread back to the top.
Comments that are less important to the community as a whole, I don't bother with if a signifigant amount of time has past. |
someone is already doing that, replying to years old threads and bringing them to the front page. I learned to look at the original posting date before clicking on any!
If I'm searching and find something I love, It doesn't matter to me how old the thread is: I will often post a comment- especially if the thread didn't get the attention it deserved the first time through. From personal experience, it feels really nice to get an encouraging post after a long time - so that's why I don't hesitate to do it for others.
I tend to follow links from here to there and sometimes I'll go ahead and post a response before I remember that I was following an old link. If it's new to me, chances are it will be new to some others, too. Sometimes a flashback is a good thing, especially if it's a beautiful quilt that someone made. I don't get around to reading QB every day, so perhaps I missed something, and your rehash might help me catch up. I don't think of QB as strictly following a time line. You can browse by topics or quilt types and turn up all sorts of good stuff that is quite timeless.
