Old version of EQ question

I have an old version of EQ4 that I was gifted. I'm trying it out and figured if I liked it and could get it to work for me I'd upgrade. I'm trying to add a fabric to my library and when I go through the normal import process I get a pop-up saying not enough memory. I can't find the file path for fabrics or I would just back-end the process. Does anyone have any advice? I'm fairly software savvy but this is not making sense to me. TIA!

I don't have EQ4, so I'm not sure this will help. In EQ7, under Libraries/Fabric Library there is a button for "Link Library". This option allows you to select a directory that contains additional fabrics. The library can be anywhere. Hope this helps.

OK, I don't have the book but I have the program still on my computer. Are you scanning the fabric to add to your library or are you trying to add fabric to your project from the EQ library???

trivia42 07-14-2014 01:13 PM

scanning. I've "scanned" (screen shot with resizing) into bmp format. I go to do the import and get a "low memory" pop-up and nothing happens. the only other programs open are Chrome and I'm running windows 7.

Just to let you know, this program was written for Windows98. Did you know this? Let me look at my EQ5 and see if I can find anything that may help you.

As we wait for ManiacQuilter2, I just wanted to let you know (in case you were unaware) you cannot upgrade from EQ4 to EQ7. You had mentioned upgrading if you find you like the program, which is why I'm saying this. Electric Quilt will only give you the upgrade discount if you're going from EQ6 to EQ7.

Having said that, it's entirely possible you may find a used copy of EQ6 around somewhere. Check your local quilt shops, guilds, and groups such as Yahoo's "sew it's for sale". I bought a used copy of EQ7 for my mom at a very reasonable price and had no problem getting it installed and activated.

I did see that EQ4 was for windows 98, but I would think that would mean my computer would have more than enough memory given the progress computers have made, lol. I did email EQ, don't know if anything will come of it though.

I just checked my library and I never scanned and imported any fabric when on EQ4. With EQ5, the fabric you scan must be 72 to 75 dpi (dots per inch). Your image should contain a MAXIMUM of 256 colors. Select fewer than 256 is OK. save file as BMP. Then you need to open Paint. The image must be at MAX 200x200 pixels otherwise you need to go to image ans select Stretch/Skew.

Is this making any sense???

Manic I never did all that to import to my EQ5 I just imported any size.

They have help me with EQ5 but I am not sure if they will help you with EQ4 especially if you are not the registered user. If they don't reply or can not help you or tell you that you can not import any fabrics using EQ4 with your Window operating system, I would go thru and learn the basics of the program and see if you like the basics. Each version has improved over the years. EQ6 I have heard have a few bugs. There has been a rumor that they are getting ready to release EQ8 which will mean that version of EQ7 will be on sale. We have Rhonda who is a Power Poster and can almost answer any question regarding EQ. You might send her a PM. You can find her icon since she started this thread.

HI Rhonda. I just checked and I never imported any fabric with EQ4. Just reading the directions from EQ5 cookbook. If you notice, I just made a reference to have her send you a PM. Long time no see. Hope all is well and I like your new icon.

I was following the directions in the cookbook, got all the way through the import and got the error. My file was (is) 72 dpi and 160x100px. I thought I could go around the import and just add the file into the library but can't find the actual bmp image files in the system. Thanks for all the info so far!

trivia the reason you are having trouble is because the newer technology does not support the older EQ versions. I have trouble with my EQ5 also.

You do have to have EQ6 to get the upgrade price for EQ7. You can find EQ6 if someone wants to sell theirs.

As for the problem you are having - Does it happen in every file you try to import your fabric into? Have you tried opening a diff file and importing in that file?

I imagine the ladies at EQ will tell you what they told me. Your program is out of date and they can't do anything to help. It is due to the new technology of your computer is not able to connect with certain parts of your program. so you get gaps in what you can do with it. some things just will never work on it. I get alot of notices on 5 that say this is an invalid path. I can't open any new files on my EQ5 so I use one that already exists and just delete what I don't want in it and use it to create new designs. works for me LOL

I do have 23 lessons I wrote if you are interested in them. Most of the lessons are done on my EQ5 with EQ6 and EQ7 pics added in if the lesson is diff for each version.

However this picture importing is not one of the things I covered.

Manic - We are all great. Expecting a 5th great grand in Nov yeah! that will make 18 grands in all LOL
Glad you like the avatar. that is a star point design. mine of course LOL

I don't know if I can help but I can try. I've never had EQ4 so don't really know the limitations on it.
