I just read the back of my new Olfa rotary cutter that you must also use their self-healing mat with it. I already have several mats and wonder if anyone has had problems with the blades or mats by NOT using the Olfa mat also?

I don't have any issues. Just use the mats I have, and works fine. They probably just want to sell you a mat too!

The blade doesn't know the difference.

they just want you to buy THEIR products--use mine with other mats all the time!

just another gimmic to make you buy there products

I dont. They are just wanting you to buy their products.

I really don't think it makes a difference on the brand of mats used. I use my Olfa cutter with a Megamat cutting mat and they work perfectly fine!

Same thing as using a generic blade in the cutter - they want you to use Olfa blades but I use generics and have never had a problem. It is just an advertising tactic.

Just use what ever mat you have available. You will be better cutting results with new, not dull, blades. Cheap blades can be found at Harbor Freight. They're used in carpet cutters. Please note, to be very very careful with the blades. They come packed in oil so you'll need to wash and wipe them carefully before using to cut fabric. Also IMHO I think they are much sharper and last longer than the blades made for our sewing rotary cutters. So be very very careful to avoid cutting yourself.

Also there are several different blade sharpeners that help to extend the life of a blade. I have had good results with using one until I found out about the cheap blades at HF.

Check out the different topic threads on cutting mats. It's important to keep the clean and refreshed.
