Ombré Fabric
I have come across a fair amount of ombré fabrics in my stash some are the gradients of the same color others go from one color to another. Like all the fabric, I bought it because it was pretty💕, not because I knew what I was gonna make with it! Thus I’m here seeking suggestions and or patterns that would work well with these pretty fabrics.

I'm in the same boat. My LQS went out of business a couple of years ago and had wonderful sales, and I bought fabrics because I loved them. Some of them had been on the shelves a long time. I haven't a clue what to do with them. I think I'll take a look and see if there any pattern books for ombre fabrics......

I absolutely love ombre fabrics! I made a two (actually three) fabric bargello for Quilts of Valor with some. Susie Weaver has a pattern for this. It is not difficult once you get going. You just need to label every strip and keep them in order. She is very nice and willing to talk to anyone who needs help. I think they are amazing.
Jean Here is a link to see what you can do with ombre and an accent fabric: https://www.google.com/search?q=two+...w=1024&bih=605 |

I purchased Moda Ombre Dots and used in this quilt. Very large rectangles, but you can see the idea. Maybe I uploaded a picture. We'll see. Attachment 621948

I've been collecting ombres and gradations too. I've even learned how to dye my own. Love them!
Here are a few ideas / fun pics: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ombre+quil...ges&iax=images https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ombre+quil...77-1&ia=images https://www.pinterest.com/teribackdoor/ombre-quilts/ Here's an easy pattern/tutorial that is all HSTs. You could substitute your colors: https://www.sarahgoerquilts.com/2017...quilt-pattern/ I think it might be fun to attempt a labyrinth quilt quilt with these. Irish Rose, your quilt is so pretty! . |
Here's another free pattern. This one is from Marcus Fabrics:
https://marcusfabrics.com/cgi-bin/fa...y/projects.cgi if the link doesn't go to the correct pattern, just type "prism" into the search bar. or use this link and scroll down to Free Project Ombre Hand Dyes-Marcus Fabrics. This will download a pdf file directly to your computer https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ombre+quil...77-1&ia=images |
SueZQ and Cats, thanks for the links! :)

Using a twister ruler with ombre or gradient fabric to create blocks looks really neat. I took a class this summer using a twister ruler and then we created the blocks. A lady in our class was using an ombre fabric as her center, and it created a beautiful block once we had it all sewn together, IMHO, hers were the best because of her ombre fabric. The class was on a table runner. Lots of great tutorials on Youtube on the ruler and how to use it.

I always thought Gentleman's Agreement was a great pattern for ombres http://www.newleafstitches.com/shop/...t-x7735686.htm

Google a one fabric bargello. These quilts are ,ade with ombré fabric and usually one or 2 zinger fabrics. The quilts turn out absolutely stunning.
Donna Jordan has a video on you tube. |
I know there are a million patterns out there but I've still got a strange desire to use them as an interesting sashing.

i posted this blue jean quilt a few months ago when I joined this amazing group. the ombre fabric was my inspiration. |
I receive email from Jordan Fabrics every morning. Donna did a tutorial just this past week using gradient fabrics that might be just what you'd enjoy using for your fabric. I really like her tutorials! And there are several free patterns every week.

Thank you everyone for all your help!

Three of my favourite uses, away from the ombre designed quilts and runners are ....
* flange inserts against a solid coloured binding * binding * pieced blocks with no plan as to where the ombre shades fall (eg. used for the traditional pieced maple leaf block, so that the leaves end up getting different tones in them ... just like IRL) |
Another thread from this board that could use Ombre fabric for this easy pattern. The main fabric floats with two side pieces.

I've wondered how the Spicy Spiral Table Runner would look using Ombre rather than fabric strips ...
|
I have only worked with a couple pieces of ombre fabrics and that has been a few years back ago. It sat on the shelf mostly because I was unable to see the entire hue of the fabric when working on a project. This sounds like something I need to investigate again. There are all kinds of patterns that I have been seeing across the internet that come from ombre fabrics. The above mentioned patterns are some of the best I have seen out there.

https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...c-t190101.html Your suggestion makes me wonder, what about the good ol' Warm Wishes pattern done with an ombre? Another way I have been using an ombre is as the background constant in an applique. Not finished ... but it was the Sew Musical RxR blocks from a few years ago. All of my appliques are in a dark navy (almost black) to give a silhouette effect. The ombre goes from darkish royal to light sky blue and back to royal across the width. I've been quite pleased with the effect ... just need to get back at it ... Just too much life has been happening! |
I must admit I had to google the definition of ombre fabric and it turns out I have a piece of two...who knew? Just goes to prove you are never to old to learn something new. Some of the patterns and quilts linked in this thread are really great and I'm going to revisit here again after the project I have coming up next. Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick.

I bought some ombre yardage a few years ago as an impulse buy for the background of a star quilt. Once I got home in different lighting, it really did not work with the fabric I bought it for. I stuck it on the shelf and forgot about it, but I have plans to use it as a background for white stars. It's a fabric with a crackly print, that fades from teal to deep blue-green. I am still looking for the right neutral fabrics for the stars.
This is the pattern I bought it for: https://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop...-missouri-star |

Karen Combs’s Quilts of Illusion quilts are 3-D effects that could use the different shades in the ombré fabrics. I find them very appealing.

I purchased "Gentleman's Agreement" pattern and ombre fabrics a few months ago. Can't wait to get started on it!

This quilt was in the Houston IQF. I'm not sure if the maker used ombre fabric but I think they would work well.
