I am only one strip into cutting for my first OBW and I am already hooked! I have spent the past 20 minutes oohing and ahhing over the patterns that form with a few cuts of fabric. I want to cut every piece of fabric up just to see how it looks when the hexagons are made! Who thinks of these things ?- someone very creative obviously. If it weren't already way past my bedtime I would start sewing.... will show some pics tomorrow...need to have daylight for them to 'shine'

I did the same thing with mine LOL I twisted and turned them every which way :D:D:D I thought it was sooooo much fun. I put them onto paper plates to keep them organized while I was sewing them together :wink:

no...but I was on vacation, thought it might be pretty to work with...so bought it figuring that if the OBW wasn't the best way to use it, there is always something I could do with it. I will try to post the fabric below

STUNNING fabric! I'd have such a hard time cutting it. I bet it'll make a beautiful OBW, though. :)

After I cut the fabric, I force myself to wait about arranging the triangles into hexagons until I'm actually ready to sew. That way each hexagon is a surprise, and it keeps me motivated to see how the next one will turn out ... and the next one ... and the next one. Pretty soon, the sewing is done! :lol:

I always have my mirror in the car and when I fabric shop, I pull it out and ooh and ahhh.....Someone did spend some time developing that pattern.

do you know how mant repeats your fabric has in it. That will tell you how much fabric you will need

I used removable tape to hold my fabric pieces in place until I could sew it. I have one almost sewn together but I can't find my cut end pieces I know I cut.

That fabric is beautiful. Can't wait to see how it comes out!

ok,, stupid question,,, what do you need a mirror for?

I bought lots of fabric, so have enough to chop and enough to just drool over...one of the sets of triangle has all the horses' legs on it...if I turn them one way it looks like a giant squid :)...lol, kind of cool, but weird! Turned another way it is like a swirl...so much fun...won't get anything important done today I am sure.

if you put 2 little square mirrors side by side -tape them together on the back.. (or the one that they sell esp for this) on the fabric, you can actually see what the hexagon designs will look like after they are cut... and you can move it around the fabric to see if you like the different color combinations that you can get out of the fabric. Helps with deciding if the fabric will work well for the blocks you want before you buy it and cut it up.

this is just a sampling of the hexagons...my future DIL has claimed this quilt already and we spent 30 minutes playing with it tonight...

Your paper plate idea is great. I'm going to try that.

It's funny to hear someone else did the same thing I did, when I first was looking at the triangles I cut. Each one was a surprise and a new discovery!
I also use a hinged mirror to help determine if a fabric will work as a OBW quilt. I've made enough of them and purchased way more fabric prints than I've currently made into OBW's, so really don't need the mirror, but it certainly helps.

That is going to be so awesome! I can't wait until it is done! I was about ready to sell my kids when I was doing mine. My design wall is right by the steps into the family room since that is the only place for my sewing machine. Every time someone would run past (they never walk) there would go half my placed hexagons. Errrr. I didn't have enough pins to hold up all those halves.

Be sure and save some uncut fabric to put on the back.

You don't. Some people want to "preview" the actual designs before they buy fabric, but you don't need to.

Hold the hinged mirror open so you see 6 images of the triangle area you have the mirror edges sitting on. Slowly slide the mirror across the width of the fabric on the bolt, holding it in the same position with both hands. Then you can see what variety of triangles you might get with this fabric for a OBW.
