Which One Block Wonder book?
 

So I really love the OBW quilts. My quilt guild played with stack and whack earlier this year, so I feel like I could probably figure it out on my own, but it seems like the books might be a great guide to any hints and tips. I also really like the idea of adding in cubes.

I notice the author has 3 different books. Which one would you recommend? And why? I only want to buy one.

I purchased the latest one, have not used it yet. I figured it had the info I would need for the OBW and to include cubes.

So the later books include all the basic stuff too?

The first book, "One Block Wonders" has general instructions on fabric selection and how to cut the repeating panels, then how to cut the 60 degree triangles for hexagonal OBWs, and how to cut 45 degree wedges AND squares for octagonal OBWs. Many of the illustrations for the hexagonal quilts show hollow cubes, but there are no instructions. The 3rd book, "One Block Wonders cubed" has the same info as the first book for fabric selection & layout, instructions for 60 degree triangle quilts and lots of info on hollow cubes, but no info on octagonal OBWs. BTW, the majority of OBWs seem to be the hexagonal versions (60 degree triangles)..... Personally, I would get the First book, then just go online to see how to make the hollow cubes. I guess I have the middle book, 'One-Block Wonders encore!'. A friend had the first book and we started a quilt using it. It doesn't have any of the cube instructions. The encore book has all the info for starting the quilt as well as the cubes. Mine was a gift from my DD and it's the one I would have chosen. She said, I hope you don't have this one.... and I didn't... so happy she got me the one I wanted.

I bought the first book, was disappointed not to find the cubes instructions inside, so I figured out how to make them. I haven't purchased the other two books but have been tempted. I do think you can make a OBW without one of the books, but there is a lot of useful information in the book that you don't find elsewhere.

I just followed the tutorial on this board when I did mine. The illustrated instructions by cutebuns were very easy to follow.

At that point I don't think I was even aware of the possibility of doing the cubes.

I have since decided that I personally prefer showing off the individual kaleidoscope patterns created and add the solid triangles between the hexes.

Still enjoy the beauty others create however they do it! ;)

Unless you are interested in the many variations of the technique, I would get the first book. I personally prefer the basic version of the pattern, same with stack n whack.

I have only book 2 and think it's great, there is plenty of information for the bascis OBW + the cubes. A friend has book 3 and it goes into the more extreme hollow cubes, like ones that interlock.
