I have a bunch of one and a half inch strips, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I could make with them, everyone here on the board has such great idea's. thank you very much.

I like this pattern that was published in Quilty Jan/Feb 2018:
http://quiltingdigest.com/strippy-py...heerful-quilt/

The strips for this pattern can vary in size from 1-1/4" wide to 2-1/4", so you could augment your strips with yardage, if you like. The strips are sewn into strip sets, then cut into the triangles.

Note: Instead of purchasing the pattern at that website, you can purchase the entire Quilty magazine in digital format for the same price.

Note 2: It's really true that magazines are re-cycling patterns now!

I did a Snake River log cabin quilt in scrappy darker colors and neutrals - used up quite a bit of my 1 1/2" strips.

I'm saving this to do!

Narrow sashing between blocks. Strip quilts, narrow "logs" between regular logs in log cabin blocks. "Leading" in stained glass quilts. Cut them in squares and make a miniature "trip around the world" or postage stamp quilt.

I used this as inspiration for a doll quilt. Each strippy triangle was a party hat.

This size is also useful for doing appliqued lettering.

Log cabin blocks :-)

Wanabee Quiltin 01-31-2018 04:07 PM

Log cabin is a great one.

Teen 01-31-2018 04:50 PM

I just made a bunch of mini blocks using 1 1-2" strips. Log cabin would be a great stash buster, though.

ckcowl 01-31-2018 05:35 PM

I’ve seen some really fabulous log cabin quilts made with 1 1/2” strips

wesing 01-31-2018 05:44 PM

Log cabin would use a LOT of strips. Pineapple would also be a good one to use lots of strips.

dunster 01-31-2018 05:49 PM

I make log cabin quilts with 1.5" logs. There's such a variety in the layout I never seem to get tired of log cabin quilts.

I have to agree with the log cabin idea. I never use logs larger than 1.5 inches, frequently use 1&1/4 inch logs. I use at least 4 rounds, often 5 or 6 as I it makes such texturally interesting quilts.

The quilt below is one made years ago for my daughter at college (she's now a pediatrician and 37-year-old mom to 5-month-old Quinn). The fabric in one "log" looks like lace but is actually just a loopy print in the black fabric. There were 5 logs on each side of this one, with a 1.75-inch "hearth" block.

Jan....this is an awesome LC quilt. You must be very proud of your daughter's accomplishments.

So many uses for 1-1/2" strips, really just limited by one's imagination.

I participated in Amanda’s (crazymomquilts.blogspot.com) last summer and used up a ton of strip scraps.

Craftsy has a free pattern for a heart block made from 1 1/2" strips by Diane Knott called Strippy Heart Quilt Block. As long as your strips are 6 1/2" inches long they are useable. I'm making a table runner and a throw quilt made from various colors from mine.

Here's a couple of pictures of blocks I have made using 1 1/2 inch strips using Creatiive Grids Pineapple quilt ruler. Very easy. The ruler comes in two sizes. These were made with the large ruler (first picture is of four 10" blocks, the second is a pillow made from 1 block). Jenny Down has a tutorial on MSQC that hooked me on it. You do need 2 1/2 inch fabric for the corners and the center square. The third picture was made with the small ruler but after I took this picture I realized I had cut the outer round the wrong size and have since fixed it but didn't have a final picture.

I have made several log cabin charity quilts...very scrappy...with 1.5 in strips.

Moda calls them Honey Buns (I think). Check the Bake Shop.

This is a great thread....luv all the ideas....Jan in VA - luv your LC....JanJanq-luv the pineapples, I bought the CG ruler to make one....can't wait!

klswift 02-01-2018 08:04 AM

I used them on an illusion quilt. I am not much for 'modern' quilts, but I absolutely loved this one.

quilterpurpledog 02-01-2018 08:44 AM

Your thread reminded me of many uses for scraps-I have two large drawers full all separated into plastic bags by color. I never pre-cut them so that I have maximum choice. However, the replies to this thread are pushing my towards log cabin.

You could also sew them together in stratas, and cut shapes normally used with a solid piece of yard goods. ie..Kaliedoscope, Dresden, pinwheel, pockets on a bag, a QAG, etc.

Triple Sashing with nine patches!

Let's think outside the box! I like fast charity quilts so I typically avoid 1.5" strips. However, I like to mix it up SO I have been using three 1.5" strips (light/dark/light or vice versa) as sashing with a nine patch as cornerstone from the same color combo to surround 6.5" or 8.5" fabric squares. It goes together fast with continuous piecing. You can cut part of the nine patch strips as you cut the sashing from the WOF chain pieced strips. Looks pretty classy too! Here's a web page with an example:
http://sistersandquilters.blogspot.c...ng-finish.html

Just imagine that this isn't done on point, uses the same two colors in the nine patches as in the sashing, and has big plain blocks as centers. Much quicker to work up and a great way to use those beautiful fabrics that you hate to cut into.

I just finished a top with 1 1/2 inch strips. I started with a square of fabric and kept adding onto one side. I would post a picture but I don’t know how. My pattern is at another location and I won’t be there for another week. If you can send me a message with your e mail I will send it to you next weekend. Carolelee

The quilt is simply stunning. You must be so proud of your daughter. I've always loved the name Quinn. ALas, I had 3 boys so never got a chance to use it!

Actually, MaryEllen, our Quinn IS a boy; he's the fifth in line with his name, so I suggested Quinn as a nickname for Quint (the V!)
