If you were only allowed to have two rulers, which ones would you pick?

A friend and I got into a debate about this today. I picked the 6"x24" and the 9 1/2 square. She wanted the 6"x12" instead of the square ruler.

I'm with you Kristy...although it's been YEARS since I've operated with 2 rulers. Think I'm up to about 15 now, and all feel like they are irreplaceable (sad, but true).

kluedesigns 12-22-2009 08:29 PM

i'm with you on the 6x24 but i'd go for the 12.5 squaring.

you could always use the 12.5 to square a 9.5 block but you can't do it the other way around.

Sparky 12-22-2009 08:54 PM

I'm with Klue. Couldn't operate without 6X24 with lip, and 12" sq works for smaller pieces.

Bobbinwinder 12-22-2009 09:09 PM

The first rulers I purchased were 6x24 and 12.5 square and that was a very long time ago...actually I had one before those that is 2x18 and not for rotary cutter use. If I could only have two rulers now, I'd have to check with my bee sisters to make sure we all chose different sizes to insure access to more of the many sizes that are available...how's that for teamwork? LOL Okay, just two? I'd go with the 6x24 and the 12.5...but I'd be trying every trick in the book to sneak in at least two more for sure!

amma 12-22-2009 11:31 PM

6"X24" and a 12 1/2" square.
You will find these the handiest...nothing worse than having a ruler that is way tooo short :D:D:D

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 12-23-2009 01:20 AM

It's interesting that you all love a ruler I don't own. I have a 3 x 18 cheapie thing that came in a starter kit. Maybe I should be looking into the 6 x 24 ruler.

amma 12-23-2009 01:23 AM

It will make cutting out your fabrics so much easier :D:D:D

lynsews 12-23-2009 01:42 AM

I have several great rulers, but the one I reach for most often is 8.5 x 24. When using a small cutting mat I like my little 6 x 12. I always keep the small mat and ruler next to my sewing machine.

zennia 12-23-2009 01:46 AM

I like my 6x24 and 12.5 sq.

omak 12-23-2009 03:48 AM

I rarely use my 6x24
only two ... my 6x12 and 15 1/2" square.
Actually ... the two rulers I use the most are my 6x12 and the shape cut (as big as I can get it!)

mic-pa 12-23-2009 05:15 AM

Beleive it or not I use my 3 1/2" by 24" ruler and my 6 1/2" sq the most. Although I have a 16 1/2" square ruler I use for squaring things up. But like esqmommy I have about the same number of rulers I have acquired over the years.

LovingIzabella 12-23-2009 05:25 AM

I would have to say I agree with most of the gals the 6x24 and the 12.5".

Oklahoma Suzie 12-23-2009 06:49 AM

Those are the 2 I have, but I think I would rather have the 12 1/2 square.

mytwopals 12-23-2009 08:35 AM

I agree with Klue and others on the 12 1/2" square and the 6"x24" rulers. The 6"x24" ruler to cut strips with and the 12 1/2" square ruler to square up blocks as large as 12 1/2" and as small as 1".

Tippy 12-23-2009 08:42 AM

Well, I have to agree...sort of... my favorite is a 6.5 x 24. But being a hand stitcher of old my second choice would be a 1" by 18" . It's interesting, I never had to "square up" a block until I started machine piecing.

Ditto this for me. Those exact rulers are practically worn through at finger hold spots at my house!!

:-o

WOW! I've never seen a ruler with a lip, but boy I certainly need to look for that. I have a terrible time keeping my ruler from slipping. I've tried every trick I've heard of, but continue to slip.

BarbS 12-24-2009 07:06 AM

6 x 24 and 12.5 square for sure :)

shaverg 12-24-2009 07:13 AM

I actually have a 6x24 6x12 and then I found a 6x14 which is my favorite, sometime the 6x24 can be a little unruly, no pun intended. I also have my 12.5 square which I love and use probably the most.

I have two with lips. One is a my favorite the 5x24 Olipfa Edge Ruler with black markings. I have one that had gold line, but didn't like it. I gave it away.
My other favorite ruler is my 16 1/2 in square.

Boston1954 12-24-2009 08:44 AM

I have three, and if I had to give one up, it might be the 12" square. I realize that I rarely use it.

Ilovemydogs 12-24-2009 10:24 AM

I use a 6 x 12 and a 6 1/2 x 24. I like both of them!

Jeannie 12-24-2009 10:55 AM

I have one 12.5 and I work well with that

Deb watkins 12-24-2009 11:11 AM

I would have to go with my 6 x 12 and my 12.5 square. Though I do grab my 5x18 when I need to line things up

Quilt Mom 12-25-2009 01:51 PM

I like my 8.5" x 24" - for strips, and also good for borders. Then there is the 12.5" square., if I have to choose. What I really use depends on the pattern, as I have 4 or 5 square rules and 2 24" rulers. Ah, well...

adriansmom 12-25-2009 03:45 PM

I own only 5 rulers...is that wrong?? LOL The two I use the most is my 6x12 and 15.5" square. My other rulers are a 4.4 square, 1x6, and 6x24 which I never use.

I also started with those two... but now I love my 6.5" square ruler more than my 12.5" square ruler as I am making smaller blocks, with smaller pieces.

rdem 12-25-2009 10:48 PM

[quote=kluedesigns]i'm with you on the 6x24 but i'd go for the 12.5 squaring.

I would go for these too :!:

Maksi 12-26-2009 02:05 AM

I have only 1 ruler. Its a 30 centimeter square ruler from Omnigrid. And I use a geometric triangle that my DD use for school.

This is a nice topic to read, because I want a second ruler and I don't know wich to choose.

Damkina 12-26-2009 02:27 AM

I did start off with a 3 1/2 by 9 1/2 in a sale, but once I decided I loved quilting and would be carrying on I bought the 6x24 and eventually the 12 1/2 squaring up ruler.
I wouldn't want to be without these two now.

jdavis 12-26-2009 03:39 PM

I completey agree with Klue on this one....I've been relying on my 12.5 square almost exclusively, and finally decided to put the 24" on my Christmas list. Guess what? I got it! It's going to be soooooo nice to have the length!
