My mother-in-law gave me this fat quarter set today. I'm wondering what kind of pattern to use it with? Any ideas?

Oooh. I don't know what you should use it in, but they're just stunning!
|
if you want to add to it, yellow brick road comes to mind, or turning twenty which uses larges pieces.
beautiful fabrics, you are lucky to have a great MIL |
Something oriental = kimonos or chinese lanterns
|
a kimono quilt.. there are some very cute patterns with each kimono being one of the fabrics you would have and then a common background setting fabric.
|
Pretty fabrics!!
|
nice.
|
How about D9P? That would blend them together.
|
Wow, they are beautiful. What a great MIL you have.

Those are beautiful fabrics! I would go for something that uses large pieces or has a large center square so that you don't have to cut them up into unrecognizable pieces. JMO. What a sweet MIL you have! |
Fans?
|
I was just at Hoffman Fabrics. They have a free downloadable quilt pattern that looks like Japanese Lanterns. http://www.hoffmanfabrics.com Click on the free quilt patterns in the sidebar, it will show all of them, but the Japanese lantern one looks like it would have bigger pieces like suggested.
|
Ohh, so pretty! Not sure what I would do with it but can't wait to see your final product. Stack and wack sounds nice.
Thanks Lucky for the link. Very pretty patterns! |
I was going to say fans or a kimono patterns :D:D:D
|
Very pretty.
|
There is a pattern called "Bento Box" that works well with Oriental style fabric.
|
Ooooh! I have been admiring some of the "fan" quilts on these pages and I can see these fabrics in one of those!
What a nice MIL you have!! |
Wow! I have bought quite a few Japanese designs for machine embroidery (I buy designs that I envision in future quilts!); your fabric would be perfect to go with my machine embroidery blocks. I especially like the middle one. (SIGH!)

What is a kimona quilt pattern. I love finding new patterns.
|
From the look of those beautiful fabrics, I think it would be sacrilege to put scissors or rotary cutter to them!
I would use them in as large pieces as I could, with something subtle, like marbles, to show them off. Ooo - isn't fabric delicious!! |

You could try this Shadowbox pattern. I got mine at a LQS but it's from Mountainpeek Creations in CO, 888-768-5922. 68"x81" uses 7 FQ's so you could add a couple more.

would work well with those fabrics. |
How about an Aussie Quilt. It showcases the fabric nicely. Or a Fan quilt.
|
how about a fan quilt?
|
Part of the great charm of quilting, to me, is the fabric. I love collecting the stash...I love beautiful colors.
|
how pretty!! do you have a fabric to add to them? it would be lovely to have a large center of your features.. then strips around.. like a 9-patch. but the center is very big and the strips are small to show off the fabric.
cut sizes center 6.5" x 6.5" sides 2.5" x 6.5" and 4 corner stone 2.5" x 2.5" You can repeat the center for the 4 corners and then use a more tone on tone for the sides in several shades... set side by side |
Everyone has such great ideas! I've looked through endless magazines and websites and I just can't seem to find something I like. Does anyone ever have so much trouble finding something to do with specific fabrics?? I'm going to keep looking...and if I don't find a pattern I like then I'm just going to sit on the fabrics until something comes to mind.
Thanks everyone! |

When I suggested this pattern it's because I have seen it done in various asian prints and it was beautiful. Should have included that information in my first reply. It only takes 7 FQ's for the focus in the shadowboxes. I made it in only one fabric because my g-dtr loved the fabric.

thanks for the sweet note!! I TOTALLY forgot about the China window block McCall's did after our Quilters Tour of China.. it is FREE! http://www.mccallsquilting.com/conte..._WB_layout.pdf
Here is mine.. and if you had the issue it was in you could see all the blocks turned in... it's an awesome block |
what amazing fabric... that is so cool!
|
My friendship group made a Teapot quilt using all oriental fabrics. The teapots were fused on black fabric and then they each used their favorite decorative stitch on their machines and stitched around each piece of the teapot. It came out beautiful.
Some were able to fussy cut parts of the fabric to give the teapot extra zing. |

your welcome! I had no more of any of the Asian fabrics in my block.. I keep thinking I should collect more like it and do 4 more blocks... or maybe just frame out the one for a wall hanging...
hope you try it.. I think with a light sashing like i used your fabrics will just SING! |
