Opinion, please - quilting for placemats
2 Attachment(s)
I'm making some quick placemats for my mom. I've taken her on several trips to Maine and when I saw these charm squares they reminded me of our trips. I'm trying to figure out if I really need to do any quilting in the squares. I sort of want the fabrics to stand on their own in this case, plus I don't really want to do 6 thead breaks per placemat just in the squares. I'm using Stiff Stuff by Sew Lazy for the batting layer, so I don't think I probably need to quilt any closer. The squares are 4" finished. I've done 2 close rows of quilting in the sashing and 2 rows around the border. The red at the top is the binding fabric. Do you think I can get buy with the quilting that is there now?
Absolutely! I love the ways these came out - great job!
Pretty placemat! If the squares are 4 inches, I think the quilting you have done will be fine.
as you said, the fabrics stand on their own. i'd call the quilting done.
What did you use for the lining/batting?
They look good to me. |
Absolutely! Bind them and you're done! Beautiful!
They are great as is! Finished project!!!

I think you're ok with the quilting you have on the placemats. I think hand wiping spills on handmade placemats makes them look new longer than if you were to toss them in the washer and dryer.
Thanks for mentioning the Stiff Stuff (or stiffer dense interfacing) - I'll have to look into it for the placemats I want to make. Nan |
I am not familiar with the product you are using but with 4" squares, I think they are fine. You picked a REALLY CUTE FABRICS. She will just adore them.
i trhink they look great just bind them!!!
Thanks for all the input, everyone! That's what I love about this board. It's active enough that you can post a question like this and get several opinions in a short time. I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't just thinking it was enough quilting just because I wanted it to be enough. :)
I think they look great. You don't need to do another thing!
Does the interfacing shrink? Become distorted when laundered? Or are the mats to be wiped clean only? They are wonderful placemats! I am sure your quilting is adequate. I've not seen this interfacing before & really need to check it out, I have many relatives who always use placemats,, are always hoping for new ones and I am always trying new (innards) some not so successful.

The stiff stuff is 100% polyester, so it should not shrink. It's reasonably firm, so I would not expect any distortion. I made placemats with it at Christmas and they were only washed once, but they came out of the washer and dryer looking just like they did when they went in, but cleaner.

This looks and sounds like Soft and Stable. That is just another brand name. I have used it instead of fusible fleece in bags and it's great. It keeps the sides of the bag really smooth and taut without quilting. I used it in my sew easy bag too. It feels kind of foamy, doesn't wrinkle, and gives things a great, soft body without stiffness. It feels and looks like it would be hard to sew but it's not. It's simple and doesn't really bulk up. I did trim my seam allowances. It's really nice stuff. You will never use fusible fleece in a bag again!
If you don't ever wash them, they will be fine. But if you ever intend to wash them, the fabric squares will puff up a bit because the batting will wash differently than the fabrics. So you migh want to do a bit of quilting in the fabric blocks.

I like it as it is.

I'm with everyone else. Very pretty as is, just bind it and be done.
Very cute placemats and I agree with most of your responses..... keep it like it is.
That's what I was concerned about too. It sounds like a magic stuff that I will start using as batting shrinks when washed, and I ended up not using anything at all.
Thank you so much everyone, for all the information. |
They are gorgeous! If the squares were six inches or larger I'd say do a cross hatch, but you have done a terrific job.
I think they are great placemats, and you have done more than enough quilting for a placemat. Great idea for placemats.
These look fabulous I wouldn't change anything.
Perfect,just bind and give.
They look great the way they are. The fabric really stands out and it's really cute!
They look great as is.

It looks perfect just the way it is. With Stiff Stuff, you don't have to worry about closer spacing. What a nice way to commemorate your trips together!
Cute, cute lobster fabric. I find that too much quilting on a placemat puts my wine glass in jeopardy. Just saying . . .
I don't think you need to do anymore quilting - looks lovely.
