Opinion - Should I handquilt or longarm?

1 Attachment(s)
I've just finished piecing this quilt by hand using EPP and hexagons. Now the debate is should I hand quilt or just send it out. I have hand quilted a few quilts, it takes time, but that isn't really an issue. I am keeping this one for me. If I handquilted it would either be just inside each hexagon or in a Baptist fan pattern. If I sent it out I was thinking feathers that followed the wavy paths. Your opinions please!

i'd love to see it hand quilted.

What a beauty! And what a decision....hmmm....I think if it were mine, I would continue with the hand-sewing theme and do the quilting by hand as well. But....I sure do like the idea of feathers!

It takes me a long time to hand quilt so I would either send it off to the long armer of machine quilt it myself. Lovely top so do what feels right to you.

Do you Love handquilting - I mean really LOVE it, that is a pretty large quilt? Also do you have a deadline to have it done? Those are the 2 question would ask myself. If the answer to 1 was yes and to 2 no, I would go ahead and handquilt it. I think either the echo or Baptist Fan would look great

Definitely send to a longarm quilter

I would like the look of handquilted lines inside each hexagon or else feathers following the waves of color, which probably would not be easy to do by hand, so longarming for feathers. I don't think I'd like the look of a Baptist Fan pattern as well on this top. Just mho.

I just finished a grandmother's flower garden, and don't usually hand quilt. I decided if pieced by hand I was going to
quilt by hand. I did and really loved quilting by hand. I'm missing not having a TV project I can do while watching TV
with my husband in the evenings. I had no deadlines, but it probably only took me a few months to complete. Mine
was full sized. So I say hand quilt!

I believe I have done 4 queen size quilts by hand - at least that my memory allows for :). I would guess it would take me about 6 months to complete, mostly because I only work on them here and there when sitting around in the evening. I'm in no rush as this one is for me to keep. Thanks for the comment about Baptist Fan from JustAbitCrazy, I wasn't sure about it and I don't like to hand quilt over seams, the extra fabric bulk makes it harder.

If I had taken the time to hand piece a top then I would hand quilt it, even more so since it would be for myself.

I think hand quilting a quilt you will keep will definitely make it a heirloom.

That is a beautiful use of color; you did a wonderful job on it. May you enjoy every stitch if you decide
to hand quilt it. Love your quilt.

I too am making one for myself 3/4" hexes. I'm not yet. My thoughts were it was hand pieced (EPP) so I should hand quilt it. then I thought and figured if I had it machine, it would be fancy. so i'll be sending mine out.
Your quilt is absolutely fantastic. good luck with it.

Bluebonnets 03-31-2015 11:12 AM

Oh, what a beauty! Hand quilt it, definitely. You obviously have the patience and skill for it.

SewExtremeSeams 03-31-2015 12:17 PM

Your quilt is beautiful. I especially love your black, white and read hexies at the top and bottom. Striking.

Maureen NJ 04-01-2015 08:42 AM

Your quilt is just beautiful! I would definitely hand quilt this heirloom.

Since fewer people hand quilt these days I would do it that way to make it extra special as a heirloom! Beautiful quilt & love the color placement!

paoberle 04-07-2015 03:06 AM

Beautiful quilt! Since you have pieced by hand, I would love to see you finish by hand, especially since you said that time is not an issue.

Amen and amen! It's a beautiful top, but it is too large for me to even think about hand quilting. I am so glad for long arm quilters! froggyintexas

If you enjoy hand quilting and aren't in a hurry to get this one finished for yourself, I think hand quilting would be the most satisfying.

judykay 04-07-2015 06:40 PM

I am h a nd quilting my hexi quilt but it is not ne a r ly as big. I have only sent one quilt out as it w a s bed size and i knew i eould not get it quilted by hand as it is mine and these tend to get put on the back burner. I love the feather idea, i think it will be beautiful no matter what you decide.

maryb119 04-07-2015 06:43 PM

I would hand quilt it. I love the look.

janedee 04-07-2015 08:11 PM

I would definitely handquilt, so much more satisfying especially as you have hand pieced, I don't think I would do a baptist fan pattern though, would detract from those beautiful hexies (just my thoughts though). It is a lovely quilt.

Teddybear Lady 04-07-2015 09:17 PM

It's a beautiful quilt.
