I would save some. A week after you get rid of it all you would be sorry. A fat quarter of each would be great
Good idea---just don't think I could part with mine, although I need to :XD:
After you decide what you want to really keep I am hoping you would sell on here.
wish I could come to your sale!
My question is Why do you have to sell any?
Save the fabrics you really like and have plans to use in a quilt.
Sell the rest so they can be used by other quilters. Better than being left to sit in a box. |
Wish I were closer!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember to keep a few bigger pieces for backing...
I would get rid of the material I know I wouldn't use and keep those that I just love. I woul think about the patterns that I would like to make and keep fabric for those quilts. I would also make sure I had enough fabric to make unplanned quilts. Think about how mny more quilts you want to make and make sure you have the fabric for those quilts.
Where do you live? If you wee in my area, I would love to go to your garage sale. |
That sounds like a great idea to me.
sounds like a plan to me...great idea to save a bit of each fabric...just wished I was going to your sale!!! VBG
If you decide to sell through a garage sale, please let us know here. Some of us might take a road trip to help you de-stash. (Aren't we wonderful?) ;) ;)
Sounds right to me! It will be hard giving up your precious fabric as is, so keeping some of each will make it easier! :)

I'm thinking I'd just keep it. Your daughter can always have a fabric sale after you're gone. Who knows, you may live to be 100, and you don't want to run out of quilt fabric if you can still sew! Let her worry about selling it! :-)

You may want to donate some of it to a local guild that makes quilts for those in need or soldiers or some other good cause. It may it easier to let go.
I would put together enough fabric to make 2 or 3 quilts using up my favorite fabrics. I would then keep 1 to 1/2 yards of the fabrics I really liked.
I am sorting out my fabric also. I have gone though my patterns and have made up packets with a pattern and the fabric to make it. I now have my projects organized with the pattern and fabric ready to go. My problem has always been to buy fabic with no purpose in mind and therefore the stash that has gotten out of control.I would suggest that you keep the fabric your eally like but put it with a pattern so you remember why you have kept it.
Good luck with going through your fabric and deciding which to keep and which to sell. Sounds like a big job.
I don't know. That would be a hard decision to make. I am keeping
all of my fabric and told my daughters to give it to the quilt guild if they didn't want it. |
My kids are so worried about having to get rid of it when i'm gone, I'm going to leave them soooo much its going to make their heads spin and they will be cussing me out long after i am gone, and I will be watching from heaven and laughing my butte off. I hate daylight savings time.
I would get rid of the "why did I buy that" fabric? Keep all of the fabric that you like and find patterns and get busy and do as many quilts as you can. I have hundreds and hundreds of quilting books - probably won't make buy a few quilts out of all of them put together. Once in awhile, I do pull them out and look through them, but will not get rid of them. As far as I know, no one in my family is interested in quilting. My girlfriend will get all my quilting related things - what she doesn't want will go to a quilting quild for the members' use.

I would keep half yard cuts.

scrap quilts along the way, the more variety, the more interesting it is, at least to me. You are my age also, and I think we begin to realize we aren't going to make another 100 quilts, ha. |
I think that would be a wonderful idea.
Keep at least 1/2 yard of each piece. If you don't, somewhere down the line you'll probably find yourself wishing that you had.

I think keeping 1/2 yard of each you like is reasonable. And if you have some that are excellent for either blenders or if they are very useful overall they might be worth keeping a yard's worth.
And if there are some you don't like at all pass those along, you most likely won't use them. I think if you post here as some have suggested you would probably make out better than just a yard sale. |
I have sold most of my stash over the last 12 years. I was a real fabricaholic. Now I just have my favorite things plus a few more that I am going to post on here when I get around to it. I found my tastes and needs have changed over the years, and I don't sew as often. I would keep a little bit of your favorites and sell the rest. Post them here, I am sure you could sell some of it.
I think that is a great Ideal.

Hugs and smiles and good luck in your project! |
Definitely keep a couple of big pieces to back your quilts with. I would keep the fat quarters as i find them so handy in so many of my projects.
Thats a great idea. I too love fabric and hate parting with it!! That way you can keep a little remembrance.
I would definately buy from you if you put some up for sale on the board. I would love to help you pare down your stash.
I think you should definitely keep a stash of whatever size you can handle. I agree with the others about selling here on the board. I watch the listings, but things go so fast that I haven't been able to purchase anything yet. lol Selling here would allow you more time to sort and decide since you won't be limited to one or two days like a garage sale. List as much or as little as you really want. I'm sure you won't have any problems selling and, like the others said, you will get more money than at a garage sale. Wishing you well. Hugs.
Start selling here first since you are not having the yard sale for a few months anyway. It may all be gone by then!

After reading these posts, it made me wonder: do quilters in the US have fabric swap meets, like guys do with car parts and computer parts? It sounds like a good idea to me. Better still, car parts and fabrics - DH can take the kids to browse the car/computer parts with him.
We don't have them down here, but I think it would be a win/win scenario: stash clean/stash build. That way you would know your fabric was going to a good home and you could go buy some more with the funds. |
