I would definitely do solid sashing.

I like the idea of solid sashing between the blocks-it is easier on the eyes-I think black would be a good color - it would make the printed blocks pop right out--just my thoughts, do what ever is pleasing to you.

I prefer the one on the left, with the matching sashing/squares, my eyes rest easy on this one.
