Opinions please

Hi everyone! I need some opinions from this awesome group! I'm making the Warm Wishes quilt for my grandson's graduation gift. The center will be there snowboard theme. What I'm second guessing myself is the sashing around the squares using the black, blue and woodlands fabric. Do you think these colors will be OK, or should I go back to the drawing board?
Thanks! |
I like what you have picked out
Cool snowboard fabric! I personally like the others too, but think the woodland one is too busy with the active snowboard fabric. I would audition a tone on tone of red or yellow or orange. Maybe the woodland for binding?
Very nice. The only thing I'd add is if there is some way (borders maybe???) to work in a bit of that red or yellow or orange that the snowboarders are wearing. Or you could maybe even just work that in with the quilting thread color. Other than that, it all goes nicely together & I love that snowboarding fabric. How fun!

I like the three you've chosen a lot and I bet your grandson will too. Looks very up to date. I like it without the orange and yellow in the border. Your grandson is lucky to have you.

I would use a less busy print in the center. What about a red or orange print and use the black for the center? My most recent Warm Wishes which I made the center square 8" finished.
I really like what you've chosen. I think the woodland print will be fine, as long as it is not right next to the snowboarder print. This is just my taste, but I would avoid adding a red/orange/yellow; I think it would take away from the snowboarders.
I like your choices. They look good with the focus fabric. Perfect for a grandson's graduation quilt, I think!
They look great! Just separate the woodlands fabric from the snowboarders so it won't look too busy.
Really like your choices
I like what you have pick. It will look great.
I love the fabrics you've chosen, but my concern is that you really want to emphasize the snowboarders print, and so you will probably want to fussy cut those snowboarders. Have you figured out a size for the center squares that will help get the maximum effect?
Trust your instincts. I like exactly what you have chosen. The first time I ever saw this pattern was in a magazine and I loved and still do the way the three strips contribute to the focus square. The times I have seen the pattern done with the 3 strips block standing out sharply have not been attractive to me.

Have been playing with your fabrics and came up with this collage to give you ideas, two using just your fabrics, and 3 more with red and a muted yellow. I think brighter reds or yellows will dominate over the snowboarding fabric.
Looks small - hope youcan see them |
I prefer either of the top two. The other 3 take my eyes off the snowboard fabric and onto the window design.
I think you have chosen well, and they should all look good together. I'll bet your grandson will be thrilled with his gift.
I really like the top left one. It is manly. I think it is the best one.
Nice fabric choices! Maybe bind with a bright color too..? jmho~
Based on Gay's layouts, I can see now that the top two better accentuate the snowboarders rather than the design. My preference is the upper left one.
I like the three on the right. I would prefer a bright yellow or red instead of the black.
I would pop a gold in there somewhere....
I like the one with the wide sashing as it makes the snowboarding fabric pop more. Like the fabrics, so know grandson will love it.
I think either one you pick will be great. If your DGS prefers darker/manly prints then don't put in a pop of color. You know him best. Your fabrics all play nicely together.
I like using black as often as I can! But either the black or the blue would be great. I don't think I would use the center one for sashing, it may distract from the blocks. Have you considered doing a black sashing with a bright color cornerstone? maybe the yellow?

I like them together, and would put them in the same order you show them. The quilt will be great!

Gay, Your pictures are awesome! Thank you so much! My husband was trying to help me with my choices earlier today and I finally just put it away... LOL But seeing your collage really helped us! I'm going to go with the top left one. It is manly, as Barny says. I don't know how you did this collage, but it really helped me. Thank you again!

Thank you everyone for your input! I enjoy learning from this site. Everyone here is so helpful. <3

Snowboarders
Yes, I'm going to fussy cut and am thinking starting with 6 1/2" so I have the 6" square. If I need to go bigger, I'm not sure what I will do. Any ideas?
The fabric you have selected looks great.
I like the dark blue one for shashing.
