Opinions wanted on color combinations please.
 

Hi,

I want to make a bargello wall hanging for my living room. My living room has dark burgendy/wine accent walls with the rest of it a creamy butter color.

This bargello uses two color families, and looks best with two contrasting colors. I really want to use a burgendy in the wall hanging and need to decide on what other color to use.

I'm thinking of a variety of deep to medium greens. (sort of like forest green for the darkest).

Does green and burgendy together always make something look like a Christmas decoration? I don't want it to look Christmassy.

What other color would go well with burgendy?

I could see a dark gold/mustardy color going nicely with your burgundy. Or a more neutral color, in say taupe to toast range. Even a grey pallete could be interesting with your established colors.

I think that greens could work but might not be the most fresh and interesting combo, and yes, it does sort of suggest Christmas and winter color scheme.

I think green looks great with burgundy and it doesn't necessarily have to look like Christmas. There are a few on this link that don't look that way to me. Also, golds, blues, beiges/tans also look great with burgundy. You could always introduce a another color or two that would help keep it from looking Christmasy. There are some that have several colors that look great.

Navy may go will with the burgandy.

I remember when Navy, Burgundy and Dk. Green were very popular. I think it would work!

Lean more towards wine and purple than cranberry burgandy and you won't have to worry about it feeling Christmassy. If you stick to the cooler tones of green -- emerald and forest vs olive or spring green -- than you have the entire cool half of the color wheel to play with. So forest green, dark blue, purple, and wine should all blend beautifully.

Elise, I LOVE your bargello! That uses the colors I want and doesn't look Christmassy at all. Thanks for sharing it.

I would put a taupe /grey with the burgundy.

I would think that you could go from a tan to a burgundy with shades of green in between. You have to realize that Bargello require lights to darks. I had done a burgundy Bargello but can't find a picture. Keep in mine if you don't mind having a little pink or mauve in the quilt because that is the lighter side of Burgundy you will be OK. Best thing to do is what Dina and I do. Start laying out strips of fabric and tweak the fabrics until what you see is pleasing to the eye. This was work in progress for my Aurora Borealis which has been finished. Good Luck !!
