Maybe not, but I'm not up to doing all those mitered corners LOL

I like it with the black border. Without, it's definitely too squished. And even if you cut the blocks down in size I think it still loses something being that small.

For the shadowing - you can always cut the panel out, after you applique the blocks on, so there is no fabric (or just a 1/4" frame) behind each block. Or, some fabrics are denser than others. Kona hides colour pretty well, Michael Miller shows everything for example. So maybe a different fabric? Even, as someone said, a beige might help and won't show beige. Pick something that you can't see your hand through, turn it wrong side up (to hide whatever colour it has as much as possible) and put it behind the light fabrics.

Layout is awesome.....I like the single black border....no additional border needed, For my taste. This is really cool. Good job!

Try a piece of heavy interfacing behind the cubes. not sure how large the cubes are and if it will interfere with the hand of the quilt. if it is ok maybe you can crumple the interfacing to make it softer before applying, just cut it larger than the piece and then trim it out.

Another way to miter corners is to use a half square triangle in the corner and then add pieces to it.

Going to be an awesome quilt. I think platyhiker has a good suggestion rotating the blocks that are aligned vertically. I also like them tumbling onto the border.

I ended up going with this version:

they are all appliqued onto the quilt ... now I need ideas on how to quilt in the negative space ... keeping in mind my FMQ experience is limited!

Thanks all

I will be adding a 4-inch border (black fabric with white bubbles). How does this layout look?

I like this version. It also gives it more movement.

Looks great! I'd probably either do rays coming out from the center (and breaking them so they go "behind" the blocks), or a spiral out from the center - I think you should be able to do this with your walking foot, especially once you get the first couple of rounds done.
