JoyVoltenburg 02-18-2010 09:14 AM

I just ordered a Voyager 17 with a Hinterberg frame today. I cannot wait to get it! My husband finally gave up all protests to putting it in the front living room. I was pretty persistent that we really didn't use that space and I might as well be using it for something I really want to do. So, now he's talking about adding on a sewing room in a couple of years. Which is just fine with me as long as I don't have to wait until then to get a longarm!!! I'll post pics on the process of setting it up.

Lucky girl!! Enjoy! I am kicking myself for not buying a longarm. I just spent 4 hours ripping out a quilt that I am working on. I have the Megaquilter on a frame and don't like the short depth.

Jill M 02-20-2010 08:34 AM

Have one-love it- great company to deal with-only do free motion quilting-started with charity quilts and now have a small business-e-mail me if you have questions Jill

JoyVoltenburg 02-20-2010 11:54 AM

Oh thanks everyone. Jill, thanks for the positive feedback on the company and will probably be talk to you more. I researched a lot of the forums for comments from owners and found most people have had little trouble with it and that the support was great. I don't have a lot of room - maybe someday I'll have a bigger room. I've been practicing designs on pen and paper until my machine arrives. Counting down the days!

Hi Jill;
I got my new longarm in December and would love to eventually turn it into a small business. Any suggestioins?
Any help would be apprecaited.
Thanks;
Myrna

Hi Myrna, Received my LA in Nov., 3 years ago. Had a friend in the business come and help with tips and suggestions. I practiced on alot of Linus quilts and a friend had many quilts to practice on for free. Started business maybe 3-4 months later. I only do free motion and lots of basic patterns-not much custom,but i am learning new tech. all the time. Get a dry erase board and practice patterns on that. I have an acct. that helps with taxes because I sell batting also. Keep records of everything--mileage to and from shops, shows,retreatsetc., retreat costs,supplies, donations of quilts and services. Check prices of quilting in your area and go from there. I usually charge 10.00 a bobbin and somewhere between the total inches of the quilt----some say Im to inexpensive. Hope this helps--let me know Jill

I have a Hinterburg But haven't seen anything in Yahoo for help.What is the exact sight I'd find that on?

JoyVoltenburg 02-22-2010 07:24 PM

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HinterbergQuilters/ is the link to the group. If you go to groups.yahoo.com you can search for all sorts of groups. There are a couple of others I find helpful too - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Machin..._Professional/ and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/homequiltingsystems/.

It arrived yesterday afternoon and I spent the afternoon watching a cool dvd about quilting design, reading the manual front to back, and staining the frame. I'm going to start to put it together tonight after work. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I received delivery on Tuesday afternoon and by Tuesday evening had stained all the wood pieces and watched a dvd (Longarmed and Fabulous - hysterical opening, but good advice on custom quilting).
Wednesday after work, I started assembling and had it mostly assembled by 9:45 that evening. Thursday, I finished adding the leaders and unpacked the Voyager and started assembly on that. I quit at 8:30 last tonight when it was time to add the stitch regulator. Tonight, I have to attend our 16-year-old's last home basketball game and won't get home until around 9:30; so, I'll finish everything on Saturday. My husband is having second thoughts about such a large addition to our living room - but I just smile and say it'll be fine honey. I've got it set up with 6 foot poles and bought extra hardware and poles to make it 10 foot when needed. I also ordered some batting from JoAnns with a 50-percent coupon and got that yesterday. So, now I can practice all I want. I'm planning on doing lots of practicing before I do a real quilt. I've got two to finish whenever I get to that point. I'd been attempting to do feathers on my DSM and they were "okay" but not as good as I'm hoping they'll be with this setup. I've got some pics of the progress and need to get those downloaded to the computer and will upload soon.

Hi, you won', regret it. About 1 1/2 yr ago I moved 90% of my sewing room into the LR. We never used it because we use the den on the back of our home and our converted garage is my DH's ham radio room I'll try to get some pics for everyone. (My neighbor used to call it "this is just a big hall!)
