I have a santa pattern like that, but don't know any of the details. It is put away in a cupboard in a room with no usable lighting right now. It is after 11 pm here, but I will look for it in the morning and get back with you. Hope this helps.

I seem to remember something like that in one of Eleanor Burns' books. A Christmas book. Will try to find name.
Found it!!! Quilt in a Day - Christmas Quilts and Crafts - Eleanor Burns. It was published in 1995 - maybe you can find it in a library.
It is a "Jingle Santa Ornament. On page 92. I remember I wanted to make some. Thanks for reminding me :o)
It is made like strip piecing - sew the strips together, then cut out the "tie" shape all the way across.

I have that pattern too. We made them in my small projects class, added a small jingle bell at the point of the hat, two tiny buttons for eyes and put a pin clasp on the back so we could wear them on our lapel during the holidays. Everyone loved them!!

It really is less trouble to do it without paper piecing IMHO.
