Osnaburg versus muslin fabric?

Yesterday, I attended the Road to California quilt show and stumbled upon a vendor who made rag quilts using Osnaburg fabric as an additional layer for ragging. It felt and looked like muslin to me and ragged very well.
Do you think unbleached muslin that frays easy would work just as well?
BTW, the show was fabulous! Spent way to much but have oodles of fabric, patterns, and templates. Plus exercise to last me a month. LOL ....the exercise that is...

I know that Hancock Fabrics sells the Osnaburg and it is in the muslin section. It is really nice, thicker than any of the other muslin they sell. It has almost a linen look to it. It is manufactured by Roc-Lon.

Osnaburg is much heavier than muslin and very loosely woven, almost like burlap, but not as coarse. It's great for primitive stitching.

http://Freckleberriefarm.com I use Osnaburg for many of my rag quilts. I am making a denim rag quilt now. Denim, red Osnaburg and flannel backing. They have several colors.
for some reason the URL is not working, but if you type it in you will find the site.

Was it 4 layers of fabric or was this fabric on the back or in the middle? I'm a little slow this morning.

Not sure if you mean my quilt, but I have denim red Osnaburg and a plaid flannel.

The rag quilt I saw had top layer cotton fabric, then layer of osnaburg fabric ( same size as top layer and bottom layer, then batting cut 1 inch smaller , then bottom layer. .
