I am sure most of you have heard of Ott Lites? I have a desk model and a floor model. But did you know that the full spectrum lighting can also be found in Home Depot and Lowes as light bulbs for ceiling and lamps?
Dr. John Ott is the developer of full spectrum lights. He did the research that shows our hormones depend on the full spectrum coming from the sun. Even if you sit under an umbrella, you still get the sun's benefit. I corrected an estrogen deficiency by learning about Dr. John Ott back in the '70's from my doctor/nutritionist. Long before Ott had developed the Ott lights.
So not only do the lights help you see the colors in your fabric better...but they are good for your health. And, yes they do help people with SAD disease....

Every year I have SAD! Thank you, I didn't know there was help. I thought I had to pull up my boots and just get on with it! Or through it! I will buy an Ott light if that is what it takes!

You are so welcomed! I always feel so happy in my sewing room, and I don't think it's just because I am happy around fabrics! I have two ceiling lights with two bulbs each, and they are full-spectrum lights! They are more expensive than regular bulbs, but will last a lot longer. and they are safer than the new mercury lights we will be forced to use...

Didn't know about the health benefits, but I have two OTT lights-one has a base for sitting on the desk or table and the light can either be put in the base, or taken out and stuck on my quilting frame. It has a flexible arm so I can position it as necessary, and an attached magnifiying glass (which I can't get used to!). I also have a smaller one for my table with a gadget caddy that I find really useful. I can't hand-quilt or hand-applique without it!!

I like my floor model, which can be placed directly over what I am working on...like right now....

Any lamp that will hold the "Ott" light bulb will work. There are also "full spectrum" bulbs that may work the same to help with SAD and for better sight for project work and reading.

Please be sure to "test" out each light bulb. By this I mean that each person responds differently to the light put out by each different light bulb.

I found that I am very light sensitive especially to bulb lighting vs normal sunlight. I was using my Ott light at work and normally I used the desk lamp for 1-2 hours each morning to help with my SAD. One day I left the desk lamp light on all day by mistake. I did not sleep for 3 nights. REALLY!!! So users be aware. If you use this light late at night to sew and find you're not able to sleep the light bulb may very well be the reason. I often share this fact with store managers and sales clerks in stores that sell the Ott lights so they'll be aware and can share this information if someone complains of not being able to sleep suddenly.

Also for the light treatments for SAD it is now advised to not stare at the light bank as previously instructed. This can actually damage eyesight. For further information do a google search for SAD treatments.

My hubby bought those bulbs for the ceiling lights in my sewing area. He gets a big "attaboy" for that because I never even knew they existed and he thought of them on his own.

Did you know that they make portable lights also? My girlfriend gave me one for Christmas. I keep it in my bag as it's hard to determine some fabric colors in stores with florescent (sp?) lights. I think she got it at Michaels.

I love OTT lamps..we even have a "pretty" one behind sofa for reading. Makes such a difference.

Every light in my apartment is a fluorescent 'daylight' bulb. I have a hubby that has severe depression so I'm willing to try anything that will help. i also have one of those big square light things that are for light therapy.
