Has anyone tried the OttLite bulb that you just put in your own lamp? I bought one at Joanns on Sunday because they were on sale. Couldn't afford the whole lamp. Came home and put in my floor lamp by my sewing machine and what a difference from a regular light bulb, and much cheaper than the ottlite floor lamp.

Thanks for the info, too many times we think something only works in the original object it was made for.

I didn't know you could use the Ottlite bulb in your regular lamp. Thanks for this info!

is it a twist in bulb? I didn't know they made ant that would fit anything other than their lamps, I sure do love my lamp but need another

frugalfabrics 01-17-2011 10:12 AM

what is the price of just the bulb?

OraLee 01-17-2011 10:14 AM

Yes the base is just like a regular light bulb. I did have to take my lamp shade off to get it started because at first it was to tall, but then it was great and put lamp shade back on. I understand they use this kind of bulb in Alaska during there 6 months of night.

They are $14.99, but I paid $7.99 on sale at Joann's

Great deal...I'm going to have to get my coupon and go get me one or two.

I sure wished I would have known this before I purchased two Ott lamps! I'm going to spread the word with my quilting friends. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks a bunch!! I want one, DH said get one but that sure is a lot when I already have a lamp I love. I will get a bulb now next time I'm out.

Glad I could share the information with all of you. OraLee

Yes, I have tried them in a regular lamp. They are great. I noticed Home Depot is carrying some of the bulbs now. whoohoo!!

OraLee 01-17-2011 10:39 AM

What is the price at Home Depot?

pheasantduster 01-17-2011 10:39 AM

Thanks - what great information to pass on. I did buy the small portable lamp.
I use it when hand quilting in our room when watching TV. Having a light just focused on my lap doesn't bother others in the room.
I'm am going to look into bulb just for my spring/clamp on lamp at sewing machine.

suebee 01-17-2011 10:41 AM

Well, it seemed they were about same as Joann's, so if you have a Joann's coupon, I think they would offer at same price. I wouldnt buy one without a coupon. Really they are overpriced. but they work very well.

Me too! I've only seen them with the little prongs (that are hard for me to plug in).

No the bigger ones, floors lamps and some of the others have a normal twist in base on the bulbs. Ive tried it. Its great.

Great to know! Husband was just asking me about this last night. I just got one of the portable OTTlites using a gift card & sale price of $29.99. He was asking what the big deal was about the lamp & why I didn't just buy a bulb. lol Now I can buy just the bulbs for the other lamps in my sewing studio.

valinwa 01-17-2011 12:54 PM

Thanks for the info, I always wanted one, but thought you had to buy the whole lamp. A bit over my budget...
