this is probably a really stupid question but maybe not. I didnt expect to need batting so dont have enough for this throw quilt I did today. In my search thru bins I pulled out some white "batting" look-alike but realized later it was felt ( cheapo Joanne's felt). Would this work? I guess higher grade felt has wool in it so that could be a good "medium" but doubt the % in what I have (craft qual felt) has much of it. I plan on meander quilting so there wouldnt be too much space between where it might fall apart in wash. Interestingly it's pretty much the same depth as the warm and natural I use. Any thoughts?

I have used fleece and the odd sheet, with success, but not felt. If you are tempted to use it, washing it first may be a good idea, it could shrink quite a bit, distortion could be a problem also. Let us know how it goes, times are tough and frugality is becoming a necessity.

Sandwich a piece with the stiching you plan to use and wash that. I think it will fall apart.

Some people use part of an extra blanket as batting. Or maybe you have a mattress pad in the linen closet that you don't use any more. As Earthwalker said, times are getting tougher and we can all stand to be frugal and use what we have. We really waste an awful lot here in the U.S.

Just took a class from a TOP winning long arm quilter. She said if you are doing an art quilt, use the cheapest batting!! For the fluff factor, and NO memory. As for your stash, I donno!!!!

I think I would wash and dry it first, to see what it looks like afterwards. I would sandwich it like suggested, and then cut it apart and check it out throroughly.

I use blankets and I have used mattress pad also and they both work well :D

I would not use the felt. I think it will fall apart. I would use fleece if you have some or bath towels that need to be retired if you don't. 2 layers of flannel might give you the same effect but keeping them from shifting and wrinkling might be a problem.

I go to garage sales and find mattress covers, also use old quilts (not mine LOL), and for a heavier quilt, I use denim.
In the old days they put old denim from jeans in the quilts for warmth. ON a budget..I have also pieced together those side pieces you get when you cut your size. Use a zigzag stitch. WOrks well. Nothing wasted on thsi end.lol. Project Linus goes to a batting store and buys it buy the roll. A lot of guild members here do too. Cheaper, like half as much. Happy Quilting
