Great quilts sewmom and LuvTooQuilt!
If anyone is tired of their outdated fabrics I would looove them!!
OMGosh!! I missed the quilts that were posted earlier- they are ALL gorgeous! I love the strip/ string quilting look!! And all those tiny squares- they're beautiful!
I still LOVE peach and aqua/green combinations in whatever name you give them. For my eye they will never be dated. From deep tones to pale pastels, those colors just please my eye.
one man's "trash" is another ones treasure!! Who's to say what's outdated, it's all about personal choice
Got a chuckle out of this thread...I've been buying some vintage fabric! Have some my daughter used a long time ago in some 4-H projects, and it makes me smile!
I must be strange I love fabric I con't care when it was made the feel the color. No such thing as out dated fabric for me!
Thanks for all the responses and for the pictures of lovely quilts! Quilters on this board are the best. froggyintexas

As far as I can tell...the dated color combos keep showing up down the road. We are dealing with Avocado and whatever they called the gold back in the 60's-70's all over again with new names.
I have some fabric that dates to the early 1960's...and is a red "patchwork" paisley. Love this fabric and use it oh so sparingly (mostly in scrap quilts). Also have a tiny piece of this same fabric in a blue colorway. I'd love to have more of either color. Somehow I am drawn to the "outdated" colors and patterns and from reading the other's comments, I am not alone. Thanks for an interesting thread. Anita |

Who are THEY to tell US what's outdated and what's not? Don't drink the kool-ade, quilters. Go on what you like, not what the industry tells you is fashionable. Their profits depend on your buying what they tell you to think. We need to learn to discern when our thoughts (and our spending) are being controlled by interested parties.
If mauve is outdated, what about puce? <g> </g> |

If mauve is outdated, what about puce? <g> I felt like mine was too snarky. So, I'm glad to see that you wrote my thoughts EXACTLY! I happened to love the mauve/blue combo and STILL like it. I think people have a tendency to overuse things and then when they get a little tired of it, then it is so "yesterday". There is little doubt that the chevron stripes (what is so compelling about them that they they are so popular, anyway? They really aren't that amazing of a design--not like someone had to think for weeks/years to figure out a new style/design--, and yet someone has done a fantastic job of marketing them) and certain retro/wild styles are going to definitely be dated in 5-10 years and then some "Oh, that was so early 2010's.". I know that I don't care. If it is something that I like, it doesn't matter to me whether a magazine publisher says it is in style. </g> |
According to Wikipedia:
Puce (variant spellings: "puse", "peuse" or "peuce") is a dark red or purple brown color,[SUP][2][/SUP] a brownish purple [SUP][3][/SUP][SUP][4][/SUP] or a dark reddish brown.[SUP][5] [/SUP]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puce |

Exactly what I was thinking. If you don't like the fabric, you haven't cut it up small enough yet. :D

I just love the "outdated" or vintage fabric. If it was so bad, they wouldn't make the 30's repro fabric.
The fashion industry has tried to tell us what colors we need to wear THIS year. The quilting fabric manufacturers have followed suit. I am sort of a nonconformist in that I wear what I like and I use what I want in quilts. I don't expect to enter my quilts in any juried shows, just give them to my favorite people, therefore I am free to use what I want for fabric and patterns. I don't let anyone tell me I can't so pooh, pooh, quilt police and fashion police! Quilt on!
I have some older fabrics given to me that I'm not in love with but try to work into quilts. Sometimes I use them for my "try it and see" blocks. Often I am surprised with how the fabric really works!
Love outdated fabrics. Have loads of Christmas fabric that is quite dated but always hate to use the last of it because I know there won't be anymore!
My first thought was I guess that's why I'm a scrappy gal. I don't think fabrics are outdated, color combo's date things. Remember green kitchens, harvest gold kitchens? Never work today. But fabrics are different. I, personally do not like a lot of the fabrics today - colors yes, styles not so much. So, I combine them and like them better. The only fabric I have gotten rid of is the cheap stuff I bought over the years. Now I'm a quilt snob on a budget.

Boy you are a baby. That's the year I graduated from High School. Wish I had some of these years back.No material is outdated unless it wasn't cared for and is rotting.
I love mauve - looks good with white hair. Haven't noticed my 70+ year old quilts made by my grandmother being outdated. Still love 'em. Absolutely LOVE 30's fabrics - maybe it's because I was born in 30s?
If it was good when I bought it, it's still good for me. I really don't care if someone else doesn't like it. I see a lot of quilts made with "new" vintage fabric. What is the difference except in price.
Lots of the new fabric looks like the 60's and 70's psychedelic fabric. I HATED it then and I HATE it now. I prefer older fabric even though I like some of the colors of the present. I am not fond of 30's prints; however, I can appreciate any fabric. When almost any fabric is used in a quilt, it seems to magically become lovely. The strip quilts in this thread are marvelous. I am going to use the 16 patch with mustard accents in a quilt that I was given a box of 2 inch squares. I already have a hundred or more 16 block squares made, and I have been waiting for a pattern to use for them.

[QUOTE=justflyingin;6569787]I had written something similar and then decided to delete it all. :)
I felt like mine was too snarky. So, I'm glad to see that you wrote my thoughts EXACTLY! Yeah - "snarky" is the perfect word to describe my little diatribe against "fashionistas". I had an English course at UT one time that was about advertising techniques, and ever since then I've been acutely aware of how various factions are trying to control our thoughts (and our spending) for their own profit. If that makes me snarky - right on! Snarky rules! Ever heard of Edward Bernays? When you hear the word "outdated" applied to fashion or fabric, think "MIND CONTROL". |

I know one thing for sure, avocado green and harvest gold appliances WILL come back in style - they will just change the name. ha ha
Regarding "puce"..... when I'm making swap blocks, sometimes I'll google the color and click "images", and that will help guide me in my fabric selections.
However, when I googled "puce" I got some verrrrry interesting images! p.s. Posts # 62 and 63 in this thread are hilarious to read back-to-back!! |
I have fabric left from making all my 2 daughters clothes..and they are 45 and 47..and it's as good today as it was back then...still nice and folded to go with all the new stuff...
I love the old feed sack prints, I have made many quilts, kitchen curtains, and aprons from the over 800 feed sacks I have obtained, some of which are still stitched from the old feed mill. They are so soft, and some of the colors and patterns are amazing.
Just laughing at "puce." I bought a new Columbia two layer winter coat this year. The outside layer is definitely a greyish-brown, but the inner layer is a purple-ish brown - puce. I love it, and I get compliments every time I wear it.
Fabric colors and patterns are so much a matter of taste. I have made several quilts that were in shades of brown, which I love, but so many others avoid. Same with oranges, yellows, greys and greens. I have very little red or true blue in my stash, because those are not colors I am drawn to. Different strokes. I love the idea that if you think a fabric is ugly, you just haven't cut it small enough. LOL |
I had no idea that any quilter would consider old fabric not suitable to put in a quilt! I say scrap it in a quilt and enjoy!

Along with avocado green, and harvest gold, don't forget burnt orange--that trio was everywhere!. |
While we are talking about 'outdated' colors, if any of you run across an older fabric, that is best described as blackberry color, pM me?
I have an obsession of owning a Singer Featherweight and my hubby thought he had bought me on but in checking into that beautiful machine it says this one is the sister to the Featherweight. Looks like it has never been used and he gave 20.00 for it at a place where you buy used stuff cheap. It is still in its box.
I haven't been able to find any feed sacks so my two windows in the kitchen are just sitting and waiting till I can find some or something that I think looks like the old days..
I still love the unfashionable" fabrics.
