Overdyed cotton velveteen

I was at a LQS yesterday and they had overdyed cotton velveteen for:

$9.75 for a piece approximately 10 x 15 inches.

It was a rather coarsely woven velveteen, at that.

Apparently, the hand overdying made it so expensive.

The colors were muted fall colors - rust, olive green, brown - -

The pieces were torn -

I figure someone could get approximately 16 pieces from a 2 yard piece - Which would come to $156.00. or $78.00 per yard.

Guess I'll go look at that box of velveteen garments and start deconstructing!

Wow! That's quite the mark-up. I wonder what people would do with it and why was it overdyed in the first place? Of course, I am sure that there is someone who will come up with some fabulous pattern using this product and then it will fly off the shelves even at $9.75 a piece.

Hmm, I think I might use fabric dye and do it myself rather then pay that much.

I had to go back and verify that was the actual price! After I picked my jaw back up from the floor!

I know bearisgray! I would be saying, HUH, why ??? I have a ton of cotton velveteen that I have saved for no apparent reason. Maybe I will try an over-dye myself too.

A new gimmick to make customers buy "something new".....

Why not just buy new cotton velveteen. At least you will know the fiber content.

Maybe they are counting on the customer not realizing what the price per yard really is.
