I am in love with the Herd of Turtles Applique Quilt sold by PRQC. Has anyone ever done one of these? If so, how difficult did you find the pattern?

I love the PRQC patterns. I've done several, including 2FAQ ones, and am in the midst of making the carousel horse now. I plan to make it larger by placing pieced borders around the center carousel horse. I think they're pretty easy and I do it on the subway each morning and evening, to and from work.

I took a Hawaiian quilting class and one of the participants did that pattern, but she took the pattern to a copy place and enlarged the entire pattern. It turned out really cool. Love their patterns and enjoy needle turn applique.

http://www.prqc.com/fabric_packs.htm#Herd-Turtles She gave an excellent program for one of my quilting groups and then did a class with her pattern also. She is great! ali |
Nancy often teaches through QuiltUniversity.com
That's where I took her class though I'd already done one of her pieces, from her Baltimore-style quilt. I did the center--over 300 pieces I think! and I did most of it on the subways to and from work-- |
Is the applique portion the turtles or the water? I am trying to decide if I should buy just the pattern or pattern and fabric. I have a yard of a beautiful watery fabric that would work well and don't need to add it to my stash ;)

I did the herd of turtles. I had never done needle turn before, but loved it. I layered both of my fabrics together after I marked the top. Then I machine stitched in a VERY contrasting color about 1/2 inch inside the lines. That left me plenty to turn with out worrying about hitting the basting. All I had to take was needle and thread. I just snipped about 3 inches at a time. It was a great take along project as I never had to look at a pattern!

I've made quite a few of Nancy Chong's 2FAQ's. It's an easy way to start needle turn applique if you're a novice (like me). The latest ones I plan to enlarge with piecing around the edges, so they aren't quilted yet. I've heard Nancy Chong speak at quilt shows, and she is one energetic lady. A friend took a class from her and said that she learned a lot.
